We all have difficulties in living.
Problems of self esteem often underlie these difficulties. Resulting
depression
and anxiety, compulsive behaviors such as overeating, overspending, alcohol abuse and unhappy, frustrating relationship choices, can be changed.
My style of working has developed over many years of practice and is
interactive. Clients would most likely describe me as warm, and responsive. While serious in my work I have a good sense of humor; which I believe is essential for a productive, happy life.

I have been in practice for 17 years treating substance abuse,
depression
, anxiety, PTSD and trauma, love addiction and relationship issues.
A great teacher at Esalen Institute once told me, "We are wounded in relationship and we heal in our relationships". I have come to believe this whole-heartedly as I see our relationships with others, ourselves, and even the earth break down and get off balance, lacking fulfillment or even becoming destructive. Most people who have suffered neglect, trauma or loss become discouraged, needing support and resources to heal and move forward with hope. However, I believe all people carry the seed of intuitive insight and courage that they need to make positive changes in their lives.

Many people feel disconnected from their true selves going through life looking o.k. on the outside but feeling awful on the inside. This causes all kinds of symptoms:
depression
, irritability, anxiety, alienation, boredom, dissatisfaction, lack of motivation, and disinterest in life. Through our work together, I help you to access deeper parts of yourself which can bring back vitality and meaning into your life. Problems often arise from childhood issues or from life transistions; college, marriage, birth, divorce, or death of a loved one. Through developing a deeper connection with yourself suffering can be transformed into growth and strength.

As a therapist who specializes in trauma and related issues (
depression
, anxiety, grief), I can explore with you any past wounds and ways that they inform the present, and together we can keep - and build on - what's working, co-create ways to help heal from and integrate past trauma, and empower you to make choices to become the best version of yourself.
Our family-of-origin experiences teach us how to be with others when we are adolescents and adults. As we grow, we develop our coping and communication styles. However, later we may find that some of those early strategies no longer serve us, or that we were misguided, or we find that our choices backfired - which can make navigating the world at times scary and overwhelming. Whether you survived a childhood or other trauma, or were thrown off balance when life took you in unexpected, painful directions, it can be useful to examine your current coping skills and relationships, and determine whether any of your tools need updating.

Is your teen anxious, withdrawn, or engaging in behaviors that concern you? Is your child experiencing difficulty in school, with friendships, or managing their emotions? Young people often express their needs and emotions differently than adults, and it can be difficult for parents to understand or know what to do. In my practice, I help young people process what they are experiencing, and help parents understand and feel confident supporting their child's growth and development. In addition, I have extensive experience working with adults struggling with transitions, relationship issues, anxiety, and
depression
.

It is complicated to chose a therapist from such a long list of possibilities. It is equally challenging to tell you about my work in a few short paragraphs! Nevertheless, here I go: I can help with anxiety,
depression
, grief, lack of direction, life transitions - marriage, divorce, life threatening illness, empty nest - as well as early trauma, spiritual crisis and sexuality issues. I am fairly interactive and I maintain a sense of humor, even in the midst of very difficult situations.

Healing involves the whole person, not just the problems that person is struggling with. I believe that
depression
and anxiety are not random occurrences but have meaning. It is our task to discover the message contained within the pain. The sense of separateness that comes from this pain is often a separation from the self. As a trained homeopath, as well as a psychodynamic therapist, I have tools to treat both psychological and physical symptoms. I am faculty emeritus at the Women's Therapy Center and am a supervisor and instructor at The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley. I have also taught at Sonoma State University.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
