You can make a lasting difference for you and your
family
.
Are you worried about your teen, pre-teen or young child? Perhaps your child is struggling with behavioral or emotional issues and typical parenting isn't working. All children and situations are different: sometimes parents need assistance and other times the child needs counseling. As a parent, and having successfully helped hundreds of families, I understand your frustrations and concerns. My goal is to help you clarify the issues, learn how to overcome them, and help your
family
. I use a variety of methods to help children express themselves as well as identify, cope, and manage their expressions and behaviors.

My work as a therapist is informed by the belief that for us to heal, we must begin with an acceptance that our struggles are valid and deserving of attention. I strive to create an inclusive, affirmative space where individuals feel supported to speak their truth.

If you are seeking therapy it’s because you are motivated toward alleviating emotional distress, which tells me that you are open to a new way of thinking and feeling. Often, when a person enters therapy, they are feeling overwhelmed by the stressors in their life. Some stressors may be with a life transition (work, school, death, move, changes in
family
composition, etc.), may be with intimate relationships, parenting, a loved one’s illness or disability, financial stress, community violence, housing, and so much more. Many people are unaware of how stressors in their life impact physical and emotional wellbeing.

The people I work with are mostly struggling with their depression, anxiety (including panic attacks), anger or pain often accompanied by other medical conditions and/or history of substance use. They may have conflicted relationship or fear of intimacy with partner,
family
, friends or co-workers on the job. They are doing their best but struggling to build their lives that are stable, meaningful and enjoyable. They often come when they are facing new challenges of life and feeling overwhelmed; and after having tried helping themselves and having sought out the help from their friends,
family
and/or other professionals.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
