My therapeutic approach mainly focuses on helping my clients identify their strengths to help alleviate anxiety, depression, and trauma. I am a firm believer that our childhood experiences contribute to our beliefs, behavioral patterns, and selecting a romantic partner. Therapy is a process! To allow ourselves to be intimate and vulnerable with someone about our experiences and trauma can be daunting. As a therapist, it is my goal to help validate, create a safe environment and help understand aspects of lived experiences.

As a therapist, I know how difficult it can be to juggle all that life expects of us while experiencing mental or emotional distress. Whether it’s unwanted anxious thoughts, healing from a past trauma, or feeling stuck in your relationships, you are not alone. I work from an attachment-based model with a focus on the mind-body connection in order to help clients more deeply understand where they are holding hurt and why. I will provide a warm and safe space, free of judgment, for us to explore your past and present in order to work toward a more peaceful and fulfilling future.

I work with teens and adults by predominantly using an attachment-based approach, whilst drawing from mindfulness-based CBT.
My life is spinning out of control. I don’t know what to do with myself. How will I ever cope? Will this ever end? If you have ever experienced these thoughts or something similar, you are not alone. Whether finding a new job or settling down with a partner, sometimes life feels like a never-ending struggle. How you maneuver through life’s difficult circumstances can be emotionally and physically challenging. For example, moving to another country, city, or town (as I did when I migrated from London England to California) or the dramatic changes one experiences at the loss of a loved one.

Many of us are shaped by our experiences and aren't fully aware of the effects these experiences have in our everyday lives and relationships. We question our feelings, our thoughts and our reactions. But, they all tell a story. Our approach to treatment is attachment-based and client-centered. The emphasis is placed on exploring your values, experiences and what is important to you. Sometimes speaking to family and friends just isn't enough. We can help guide you through the process of knowing yourself and being able to understand, accept and express your emotions.

I utilize psychodynamic, relational, and attachment-based as well as elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy, and mindfulness practices.
For many of us, the challenges we face in our daily lives can be overwhelming, no matter what form they take. We find ourselves repeating the same unhealthy patterns, yet struggle to understand why. After a while we begin to lose trust in our judgement and grow distant from our intuition, finding it difficult to identify our own guiding voice. So we learn to cope through any means possible, which often emulate ways we have learned to protect ourselves. We find ways to run from the pain and our internal shame through substance use, unhealthy relationships, and other self-destructive behaviors.

I work from a psychodynamic, attachment-based , and relational lens and I believe developing a trusting relationship is essential to do this work together.
Life can be incredibly difficult at times and is further exacerbated by our present day sociopolitical context, historical trauma, colonization and our own self-perception. As a therapist, I have the privilege of supporting people to explore all the complexities of their individual experience and how this impacts all aspects of their lives and relationships. My clients are often working hard to better understand their own experience, actions, values and how to create more alignment within them in order to move towards their desired goals.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
