Short-Term Mental Health (STMH) Counseling supports high-functioning adults experiencing grief, depression, stress, anxiety, life transitions, and relationship concerns through both counseling and referrals to a diverse range of clinical psychologists, licensed marriage & family therapists, social workers, and complementary/alternative practitioners. The techniques employed at STMH counseling draw from foundations of Adlerian, CBT, and Gestalt therapy. Successful treatment is a product of a client’s thoughtful engagement and demonstrated willingness to participate in the dynamic process of self-discovery, creation, and regulation.

I work with individuals, couples, and adolescents to explore experiences of attachment trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, intrusive thoughts, personal and familial
substance use
/addiction, compulsions, eating disorders, questions of gender and sexuality, immigration, and adoption.
My practice has primarily derived from an education in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, emphasizing close attention to your developmental history, relational patterns, inhibiting defenses and the neglected power of your inner life. I understand the vulnerability it takes to open yourself up to a therapist, and I promise to join you with patience, strength, and hope on your path to self-understanding. With collaborative and creative intention, I can help you widen your point of view, increase your tolerance for variegated emotions, integrate fragmented parts of yourself, and discover the uncharted material within you.

I like helping people find contentment and happiness in their lives. I believe it is important to understand one's self and one's personal values and to make choices that are positive and life-affirming. I have had extensive experience working with people having experienced trauma and loss, relationship problems, and who have substance abuse problems. Creative people are also one of my specializations. My training is primarily psycho-dynamic along with cognitive-behavioral orientation. I believe mindfulness, spirituality and forgiveness are ways of helping alter patterns of behavior that can keep us stuck in our lives.

I think the most important aspect of therapy is someone who understands, who has been there, and who can relate. I treat mental health and addiction because I understand it personally and professionally. I feel like we all need space for support and the ability to connect with someone. My favorite saying is "progress, not perfection" this means we just get up and try daily. If you are ready to take some steps, reach out! I look forward to connecting.

I see couples all the time who love each other desperately but just can’t seem to make it work. Some couples put it this way: “It’s like we keep having the same fight over and over again and nothing ever gets resolved. We just have a big fight, followed by silence, and then we just go back to our daily lives without ever working through the issues until the next fight happens. I don’t know what’s happening or why it’s happening but it’s just awful.”

When considering our experiences in the human tribe, the process of discovering or rediscovering our truest self can be a journey laden with challenges and difficulty. However, it is often when we believe that we have attempted everything we can or know how to do to make difficult transformations, to cease our suffering, and to change unhelpful patterns, that we may find ourselves poised for growth and evolution.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
