Our team at
Teen
Translation, Inc., is expert on
adolescent
development, using treatment modalities that align with the
teen
’s developmental tasks. We love to “get preventative” by 1) joining with the
adolescent
to create a healthy identity and narrative, 2) connecting the
teen
to the family, drawing upon their greatest resource - you!, and 3) empowering the family to put the bumpers around
adolescent
exploration, while creating space for the
teen
to fall down, get back up, and discover their own capability and resiliency. There are a few factors, which I call the “fab five,” that contribute to
adolescent
behavior:

My clinical experience has focused primarily on helping individuals in the
adolescent
to young adult age, which is a critical phase of development, addressing issues around identity formation and family conflict. Diagnoses and presenting problems most prevalent for this age include major depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiance, ADHD, schizophrenia, self-harming/high risk behaviors (cutting, eating disorders, and substance use) and suicidal thoughts & behaviors. My work with this particular age population often includes helping the family system in areas such as conflict resolution, family communication patterns and repair in attachment & connection.

Are you worried about your
teen
, pre-
teen
or young child? Perhaps your child is struggling with behavioral or emotional issues and typical parenting isn't working. All children and situations are different: sometimes parents need assistance and other times the child needs counseling. As a parent, and having successfully helped hundreds of families, I understand your frustrations and concerns. My goal is to help you clarify the issues, learn how to overcome them, and help your family. I use a variety of methods to help children express themselves as well as identify, cope, and manage their expressions and behaviors.

Are you looking for online therapy resources to support your child,
teen
, or family during the coronavirus health crisis? Do you have a college student in your family who is home and looking for support? Would your child or
teen
appreciate being able to connect with a small group of peers in an online therapy group? As a telehealth therapist, I offer secure online therapy. Like in-person therapy, online therapy or telehealth offers support and skills to navigate this time of difficult change, loss, and uncertainty. It provides therapeutic structure and positive connection to help your child be their most resilient self.

I believe that we all have the resources within us to heal, and yet sometimes we need a little help. The right connection between a therapist/client can help start that healing. Maybe your
teenager
is sullen and isolated. Maybe you are in love and scared to be truly seen by another. Maybe there’s an angry side of you that your family doesn’t understand and a vulnerable side that is too scary to feel. Together we can work on acceptance, healthy coping skills, and letting go of bad habits. Without judgment, we will build an understanding of who you are as a person so as to realize your strengths and fortify them.

Individual adult,
adolescent
, and couples clients, straight and gay, and all genders are welcome.
In everyone's life, some heartache will happen. Some days, the things we do to cope with stress no longer work as well as they once did; other days, it may feel like everything is falling apart. No matter what your struggle is, we will work together to understand the source of your problems and develop practical strategies to reach your goals. In your first session, we will begin to answer the question, "What would help look like right now?" and help you cultivate and develop tools you may not even know you had within your reach.

Life losses its zeal when we become disconnected from ourselves, others, and our surroundings. It becomes even more difficult when there is a desire for change, but we just don’t know how to get what we desire most. Whether it be to learn how to smile again as we deal with our day-to-day activities, enjoy a simple walk without being bombarded with worries, deal with mishaps without going into a rage, or being able to talk to those that we love even after they wear on our nerves. That emotional burden, pain and/or fatigue can be sometimes too much to bear, whether someone be a
teenager
, young adult, elder adult, man, or women.

Family conflicts and understanding your child or
teen
can be frustrating, but with the right help and support, understanding your child or
teen
can be a wonderful experience. I've been working with children and adolescents for over 15 years. I love working with children and adolescents, because I struggled during those years, myself, and would have benefited from someone helping me to understand the various emotional struggles a child or
teen
goes through. I specialize in working with individuals living with Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, ADD/ ADHD, depression, anxiety, and school and home behavioral problems.

adolescent
engagement in treatment.
Welcome to my practice! I feel privileged to be in a position to guide people through various problems, in search of solutions and geared toward healthy living. I have learned that the most important component to creating a healthy therapeutic process is the meaningful relationships that we create along the way. I currently utilize a strength-based approach in my work with children, adolescence, and families-the focus of the work is identifying and building from the strengths of the individual. I value the collaborative effort that goes into developing a treatment plan; collaboration allows us to experience movement toward pathways of transformation.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
