As the parent of a special needs child and a specialist in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, I have a unique view of the stresses of raising children who have brain based disabilities and trauma, including FASD, ADHD, RAD, Autism, foster care and adoption, and early trauma.
Everyone has challenging times and hurts in their life they want to move past. Many need someone to accompany them to move through these times. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is key to helping people overcome trauma, grief, and disappointments to move toward the goals you want in your life. I have over 25 years of experience with children, youth and families who have experienced trauma, conflict, behavioral challenges, and life transitions including moving toward independence, exploring sexuality, and managing disabilities. I have seen the healing and growth that happen. Give yourself the chance.

In addition to individual therapy, I work with families to develop effective parenting strategies based on their unique values and needs.
I believe that all human beings have the capacity to realize their full potential and to gain insight into life’s difficulties. I tailor my approach based on each unique person's needs and often utilize story-telling, dreams and archetypes as ways to make meaning of significant events. I support individuals in strengthening existing coping skills, developing new methods of support, and identifying patterns and themes in a safe, empathic space.

You are an individual with a unique story. Perhaps you’re a parent who wants to expand what it means to raise a child, maybe you’re processing trauma and working on re- parenting yourself, or you’re exploring questions of gender and sexuality. I come to this work because of stories. Stories of the human condition, stories we tell ourselves, the story that culture tells us, and stories that need repair. Sometimes we need help understanding, processing, or reimagining our stories.

When you begin to recognize that your enjoyment of your child seems to be decreasing while feelings of being stuck, stressed, or overwhelmed are increasing, early childhood mental health services can be an effective tool to get things back on track. Healthy parent /child relationships reflect secure attachment, responsive attunement, and mutual enjoyment. But many things can interrupt that process, even typical things like the birth of a sibling or starting school. These experiences can contribute to challenging behaviors in children that are difficult to handle. Therapy can help to restore connection and understanding.

Do you find yourself feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and just not yourself? Life transitions and role transitions such as a loss, becoming a new parent , or starting anew can prove to be challenging times. We try what we know, and yet still feel that it's not enough. We may begin to question our abilities and sense of self. My role is to look at these challenges with you and develop a personalized strategy to manage the stress and anxiety. We will look at what can work while sorting through what hasn't worked. Having worked with children, parents, adults and young professionals for the past 15 years, I know we will find a way through.

Areas of clinical focus include relationships, anxiety, depression, parenting , cross cultural issues, creativity and the search for meaning.
As a warm and curious therapist, I work with you to explore the inner dynamics of your personal story and to instill a renewed sense of hope. We look closely at self limiting patterns of belief and behavior which are often routed in culture and family- of- origin relationships, and we focus in on your strengths and resiliency. In a compassionate environment we address your specific goals and help you rediscover your authentic and vibrant self so that you may connect more deeply with the loved ones in your life, and with the work and activities that give you your sense of life's meaning.

Our identity is shaped by our relationships. Those attachments have created patterns in our lives we may not be aware of. Therapy is a great place to explore those patterns. Whether you'd like to work through some current stumbling blocks that seem to keep you from thriving, or explore deeper patterns that you've developed from earlier childhood experiences, I am here every step of the way. No one should walk alone. Call me today for a FREE phone consultation! (Please leave a message when you call). Thank you!

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
