It is in our nature to live our lives through stories. Often our stories can become overshadowed by the effects of problems in our lives. Trauma, anxiety, depression and difficult life transitions may have taken you away from what you value most, leaving you feeling overwhelmed, stuck or disconnected. My goal is to honor all parts of your story, providing a compassionate space for you to heal and re-claim your own agency in your life.

For treating interracial couples, my goal is to increase their cultural competence, explore their “couple identity,” and cope with language barriers in their
marriage
.
My passion is conducting therapy with Asians, both immigrants and Asian-Americans. As a Taiwanese-American therapist, I am well-versed in the family dynamics of Asian culture. I am also experienced in dealing with parent-child conflicts between first-generation Chinese parents and their westernized second-generation teenagers and adult children. My work centers on helping parents and children recognize their cultural differences in order to better understand one another and maintain healthy relationships. Sessions may be in either Mandarin and English.

Maybe today's struggle feels bigger than your ability to cope. Asking for help may make you feel a little sick, but more of the same just isn't an option. Your self-esteem has bottomed out; a harsh inner critic is running the show. Maybe you’re experiencing grief after a death or the loss of a relationship. You’re getting pushed around by anxiety or depression; you've reached mid-life and are asking, is this it? You’re dating and wondering why nothing seems to work out. Your relationships cause more stress than fulfillment and you want
marriage counseling
or pre-
marital
counseling. Whatever the reason, welcome.

Every person has their own unique process of healing and growth. Psychotherapy is a valuable pathway toward finding balance and wholeness in your life. As your therapist, I approach my work with profound respect for your individual nature, values, and beliefs. Psychotherapy is essentially a collaborative process in which we work together to explore the difficulties you're facing and find solutions that will work for you. Real possibilities for meaningful change can emerge when the essence of your 'self' is genuinely understood. My goal is to support your journey as you move towards a more fulfilling and authentic life.

There can be multiple reasons that bring someone in for a psychotherapy consultation. When a distinct problem occurs (
marital
separation, depression, a difficult parenting challenge, anxiety over one's relationships, self-destructive thoughts or behaviors, etc.), or, when one becomes aware of more amorphous and global issues in one's life (lack of growth, a pattern of isolation, lack of pleasure, etc.), it is useful to talk to someone with lots of clinical experience to begin to sort out and make sense of what is going on externally as well as internally. Careful listening to your particular situation is the first important step.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
