In addition to family and couples therapy, I frequently see individuals with a range of emotional issues, including
depression
, anxiety, low self-esteem, and anger.
My passion is conducting therapy with Asians, both immigrants and Asian-Americans. As a Taiwanese-American therapist, I am well-versed in the family dynamics of Asian culture. I am also experienced in dealing with parent-child conflicts between first-generation Chinese parents and their westernized second-generation teenagers and adult children. My work centers on helping parents and children recognize their cultural differences in order to better understand one another and maintain healthy relationships. Sessions may be in either Mandarin and English.

I come from the belief system that our life experiences create patterns in our life which can develop into anxiety,
depression
, PTSD, or just feeling stuck.
The first step to healing is the step you are taking now. Searching for the ‘right’ therapist can feel daunting. I believe the right match is so important to building the trust needed to have a successful therapeutic experience. I have been in practice since 2005 helping adults, adolescents and families.

I draw from evidence-based approaches, such as CBT and mindfulness to help you manage anxiety and
depression
.
We all feel lost from time to time, but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve been through my own therapy as a young adult when I was stuck in a bout of anxiety and panic attacks due to childhood trauma. Throughout my years of working with traumatized individuals, I learned first-hand about how childhood trauma can have a strong impact on adulthood. I can help you address unresolved trauma, in order for you to find passion, connection, and purpose in your life.

Areas of focus (Individuals & Couples): relationship issues/skills-building, career issues,
depression
, anxiety, self esteem, eating disorders, women's issues, sexual orientation issues, LGBT issues, life transitions, divorce / break ups, postpartum mood disorders and creativity issues.
You already possess the inner resources and capacity needed to heal. At certain times, however, we all need help gaining access to that nurturing capacity: a kind of 'Assisted Self Discovery.' When our minds, bodies, & emotions are all supported together in a safe process of present-oriented exploration, the potential for change is remarkable. I utilize an eclectic approach. Each session is tailored to your unique needs & personal goals. Long-lasting symptom relief/decreased suffering & achieving a more fulfilling life are priorities that guide my work with clients.

There can be multiple reasons that bring someone in for a psychotherapy consultation. When a distinct problem occurs (marital separation,
depression
, a difficult parenting challenge, anxiety over one's relationships, self-destructive thoughts or behaviors, etc.), or, when one becomes aware of more amorphous and global issues in one's life (lack of growth, a pattern of isolation, lack of pleasure, etc.), it is useful to talk to someone with lots of clinical experience to begin to sort out and make sense of what is going on externally as well as internally. Careful listening to your particular situation is the first important step.

I understand that healing takes courage, and requires trust in the person from whom you are seeking help. I value integrity, wisdom, creativity, and empathic connection. My approach is strengths-based, collaborative and empowering. I enjoy helping you make sense of your past experience, live fully in the present moment, and dream about the future.

I also have experience working with anxiety, ADHD, bipolar,
depression
, dissociation, grief, life changes, and post-traumatic stress.
Imagine a ghost who is haunting a person when they are most vulnerable to take control of them. This is the way trauma shows up in our lives. It slowly reveals itself and every encounter is scarier than the previous. Furthermore, no one else can validate this experience because they cannot see the ghost at first, which leads the person to feeling alone, isolated, and vulnerable. I can come along side with you as you overcome this ghost. You can overcome your trauma in therapy with a safe and supportive environment to take on whatever it is that is haunting you.

I enjoy working with the client's present day experience while bringing in relevant aspects of one's personal history. I work collaboratively with my clients on re-creating a life of healing and fullness. Therapy might mean working through
depression
and anxiety, significant events in the past, exploring spiritual meanings, all the while exploring the here-and-now. Having had extensive international experiences, I also actively engage in an intercultural frame and approach in therapy, exploring cultural values and intergenerational issues. Wellness is actively defined by the forces and people that has shaped and continues to shape us.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
