I am a Black female therapist and I specialize working with high achieving women. My typical client is seen as a strong woman. She can do all things and she takes care of everyone in her life. She rarely (if ever) asks for help. She is smart, hardworking, and exceptional. She is also exhausted, sad and lonely. She feels lost, broken and increasingly resentful of those she loves which makes her feel guilty. Sometimes she has thoughts of escaping her life. Sometimes those thoughts are dark which scares her. If this sounds like you, you don't have to keep taking on everyone else's problems while you struggle in silence. I can help.

Looking for a psychologist is difficult. It is important to find someone who is a close match with your needs. I approach therapy with an active style, providing direct feedback in a supportive manner. For more than thirty years, I have been successfully helping individuals and couples through Emotionally Focused Therapy, find greater enjoyment in life. For therapy to work, I believe that the therapist needs to care about, and feel connected to, the individuals he or she works with. Psychotherapy is not just a job; helping people get better and live their life in a fuller happier way is something I strive for.

Therapy shouldn't have to be complicated - it's really about sitting down and talking with another person. What is most crucial - perhaps even more important than credentials and education - is that you feel comfortable with your therapist; otherwise, the therapy won't work.

Anger, anxiety, depression, shame, and challenges with self-identity are often rooted in unresolved trauma. When left unaddressed, trauma can deeply impact our relationships and family dynamics. As your therapist, my goal is to collaborate with you in managing trauma-related symptoms and moving toward a more meaningful, fulfilling life. I use a client-centered approach to create a safe and supportive space where unresolved emotions and reactions can be explored. I believe that the therapeutic relationship itself is just as important as the modality used because healing begins with trust, connection, and the freedom to be vulnerable.

Everyone deserves to feel like themselves. Sometimes life gets ahead of us and we can feel lost, stuck and/or disconnected. It can be distressing and cause suffering. Whatever the reason, it takes courage to seek help and effort to imagine change and improvement. You have taken the first step. Your next steps will be joined by a therapist who will treat you with respect and work diligently to address your presenting problem.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
