I use an integrative approach that is based on the individual needs of the people in front of me and begins with compassion and empathy. I believe forming a strong therapeutic relationship is key for therapy to be successful. Rooted in person-centered therapy, I use empathy, respect, humor, and curiosity to guide treatment. From there, I weave various evidenced based practices together like Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment therapy, attachment theory and mindfulness strategies to challenge, empower, build insight and guide you to healthier ways of managing life.

I am a therapist that emphasizes action, curiosity and change; clients that work well with me tend to be open to learning how to use suffering as a vehicle for personal growth. I'm a hands-on therapist who is both gentle & incisive; I see my role in working with you as a compassionate, direct guide helping you navigate towards a more deeply healthy way of being. My passion is helping my patients - most often with trauma or deep fear - move towards a compassionate, calm presence in mind & body.

You’ve been carrying a lot, navigating anxiety, depression, and burnout. I'd like you to know this is a safe place to be different. I've helped many that have felt different (or are neurodivergent with ADHD and/or Autism), feel calmer, more confident, and more in control of their emotions. I can like to help you with the anxiety that won’t quiet down, stress that builds from work or relationships, maybe even a sense of disconnection from the things you once enjoyed. You’re ready to understand yourself, rebuild balance, and find meaning again, without losing the creative, curious parts of you that make life worth living.

I offer a logical, results-oriented way to find relief—fast. Together, we’ll soften the pressure so you can lead with confidence, not self-criticism.

For over 24 years, I've collaborated with people to resolve their psychological trauma, phobias, anxiety & stress as well as maximize responses to their medical diagnoses, treatments & conditions. This clinical focus stems from both a personal medical challenge since age 12 and research on treating women with breast cancer and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet Kaiser research (1998) finding 70% of primary care visits are driven by mental, emotional and relational issues highlights how mind and body are interwoven for each of us. This interplay provides leverage for preventive medicine, for responding to illness and for maximizing peak performance.

I specialize in working with families, couples, and children & adolescents. I strive to form relationships with my clients built upon trust, authenticity and collaboration. Working together we are able to open and expand possibilities to heal from pain, transform destructive cycles, and grow towards richer, more satisfying lives and relationships. Relationships often get stuck because we are unaware of ways we have hurt others and been hurt ourselves. Sometimes our best efforts to make things better seem to exacerbate the problem. I work to raise insight, facilitate healing, and open possibilities to connect in more satisfying ways.

I help thoughtful, driven adults and teens break old patterns and build steadier, more connected lives—where impact and soul align. Many clients are negotiating the tension between ambition and emotional well-being, appearing capable on the outside but conflicted inside. They may wrestle with relationships, anxiety, or quiet dissatisfaction, and have outgrown old coping strategies without yet knowing what comes next.

My clients are thoughtful, driven professionals who appear successful on the outside but often feel emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of who they are beneath the roles they perform. Many are people of color working in tech, business, or other demanding environments, or immigrants and first-generation individuals navigating complex questions of identity, belonging, and cultural conflict. Despite their accomplishments, they may feel anxious, stuck, or unseen—and they’re not just looking to manage symptoms. They want space to reflect, to feel deeply, and to connect with a more authentic sense of self.

I have over 15 years of experience working with those who have found success as measured by traditional standards, but are struggling to get beyond the next hurdle, whether at work or in their personal lives. Navigating these complexities can often feel overwhelming, especially when balancing personal aspirations with external expectations. Psychotherapy provides a unique space where you can confront and understand these feelings, and address what is holding you back.

My name is Dr. R. Austin Heafey - I am a licensed clinical psychologist who works with children, adolescents, parents and families. While every client is unique, my fundamental aim remains the same: improve self-esteem, build self-confidence and enrich my patient's self-worth. When a person has faith in their abilities and feels comfortable with who they are, they are better able to engage with the world they live in, the family they belong to and the life they deserve to experience. Put simply, my objective is to improve my patient's quality of life.

I primarily (but not exclusively) work with boys, men, and athletes. I also see couples and families who might be feeling stuck or lost. Anger, depression, anxiety, bereavement, sports performance, relationship issues, fathering, or being a struggling or grumpy kid comprise the bulk of my caseload these days.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
