My approach to my clients is warm, open, and accepting, and, at the same time, I am ready and willing to provide direct and honest feedback. I enjoy bringing a sense of humor and creativity, as well as strong professional ethics to my work. While my initial goal is to work together with my clients to relieve depression, anxiety, trauma , and other problems, ultimately I work with the whole person to develop and utilize his or her strengths to find balance and self-acceptance and to become more open to deeper experiences of love and joy.

I have years of experience working with individuals (adults, children and adolescents), couples and families confronted with a variety of issues, such as depression, anxiety, suicidality, trauma , grief and loss, stress management, relationship difficulties, divorce, and life transitions.
Sometimes the challenges we face in life can feel overwhelming and impossible to overcome and it is my belief that through authentic human connection, compassion and unconditional positive regard one can open up new doors of self-discovery that will allow them to find meaning, purpose and healing. It is my goal to help shine light on areas of your inner experience that will foster your ability to expand your self-awareness and make life changes. No two individuals are the same, thus I strongly believe in working with you to understand what your unique experience is like and adjust my approach to meet you where you are at.

As a clinical psychologist working for the military for the last 12 years, I have had the unique opportunity to help a diverse group of people with a wide variety of challenges. I have spent considerable time specializing in trauma , anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. However, the biggest gains have been with patients who were ready for change and willing to be challenged. Patients have said they appreciate my low-key style and one-on-one sessions that are problem-focused while acknowledging the past.

As a nationally-certified, Trauma -Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, I have extensive experience working with clients dealing with mood disorders, anxiety, PTSD and/or trauma -related symptoms. Coupled with my background in coaching, I will engage you in two ways: 1) a look back at the conditions which contributed to your current distress and 2) a look forward to define how you want to shape your future. This involves creating a specific vision of your desired outcome and a plan to achieve it. I wholeheartedly believe in the change process and, while difficult, it can lead to a more peaceful, satisfying and productive future.

Seeking therapy can be frightening, especially so if current or past trauma is begging to be addressed. I believe that engaging in therapy is an act of love for oneself. I am awed daily by the resilience of the human spirit, and that I have the privilege to bear witness to my clients’ stories as a partner in their healing journeys. I have a background in community mental health clinics, hospice, and school-settings serving individuals affected by intergenerational, relational and sexual trauma , domestic violence, abuse, neglect, substance abuse, and involvement in the child welfare and foster care systems.

We all face challenges in life, some greater than others. Many of us struggle with anxiety, depression, loss, relationship problems, and various types of trauma . Healing the past does not mean that we get to erase our experiences, but it does mean that our past no longer gets to control our present. I consider it a privilege to help facilitate a client's journey from dysfunctional beliefs and behaviors, to healthy ways of being in the world. I believe it is important that mind, body, and spirit are all functioning as healthily as possible in order to live ones best life.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
