Beginning therapy can feel overwhelming, and the first step is often the most difficult. There may be many issues, one primary concern or a feeling you are struggling with and would like to understand. There may be repetitive thoughts, ongoing anxiety, history of trauma , or a depressive perspective that you just can't let go of. We will collaboratively identify goals designed to meet your needs and utilize approaches from psycho- dynamic, art and somatic modalities.

Anxiety, stress, anger, conflict, trauma , and depression can impact our sleep, productivity at work or school, and relationship with our loved ones. Memories from our past can cause discomfort or lead to difficulties being present. They can also cause worry or uncertainty about the future and impact our physical health. It can feel overwhelming or isolating trying to cope with these emotions. It is during these times that outside help may be beneficial to help us overcome these challenges and work towards regaining our optimal emotional health.

Painful or frightening memories can be healed with specialized therapy. Physical or emotional trauma can cause recurring nightmares and sleep disturbance, feelings of fear, guilt, shame, or physical pain. It can lead to reliving the experience over and over again, and may result in avoiding people, places or activities that remind you of what happened. Therapy can relieve the symptoms, frightening thoughts and feelings. It can help you to regain self-confidence and feel greater joy in life.

The last year has been hard on almost all of us. Has trauma , loss or grief made it difficult to live the life you really want? How do you imagine your life changing or being more satisfying? My approach is respectful, encouraging and focused on growth. I'm trained in what are called "power therapies." EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and BSP (Brainspotting) have the potential to heal deeply, from within the brain and body, and create understanding and relief.

I am a licensed psychologist specializing in working with ethnic minorities, survivors of trauma (specifically survivors of interpersonal trauma ), and LGBTQIA+ individuals. I approach therapy from a multicultural, feminist, strength-based, and relational perspective. I will see you as a whole person with multiple (sometimes incompatible) identities. I aim to empower you to use your voice. Just like being in any other relationship, the therapist-client match is very important. Together, we will work together to address the issues you are coming in with by learning more about yourself and how you interact with others.

I work with individuals, couples and families. The relationship between the client(s) and me is important in achieving goals we set together. How trauma and abuse have influenced our current lives is a key issue. I also feel obsessive and compulsive patterns of behavior in our daily lives are important to examine.

I work with trauma survivors, individuals in high conflict relationships, substance misusers, and people who just feel that they need help getting their lives back on track.
Are you or a family member feeling anxious or depressed? Are you in recovery (or want to be) from a substance or trauma ? Therapy with someone you trust is a powerful tool for creating and maintaining emotional health. It is possible to gain insight and learn new ways of finding happiness and relief. I understand that we generally do the best we can, which sometimes is not as great as other times. Change is possible with the help of a caring therapist. I offer "telecare" video conference sessions via Zoom on your smart phone or computer from the comfort of your home. I will be resuming in-person sessions in May or June 2023.

I specialize in working with adults and adolescents impacted by trauma /abuse.
Accepting New Clients / Aceptando Nuevos Clientes! Your stories, pain and feelings are valid. Not everyone is going to understand the trauma you have experienced or the symptoms that accompany it, that's okay, it doesn't make it any less real. Methods of surviving trauma /abuse become symptoms; anxiety, depression, dissociation, somatic symptoms and hypervigilance, and can become distressing when no longer utilized for survival. They can also manifest as people pleasing, unhealthy relationships, difficulty trusting others, setting boundaries, shame and avoidance. I am here to hold space for you and your healing.

One of the bravest things a person can do is ask for help – I applaud you for taking that first step. I enjoy helping people manage anxiety, navigate life transitions, and work through trauma . Many of these issues can feel overwhelming and isolating; it would be my honor to support you through what you are facing as I know how powerful therapy can be. Having been on the other side of the couch throughout various points in my life, I understand the trust you are putting in a therapist when you walk into their office. I draw deeply from that trust and my own experiences to create a warm, nonjudgmental and compassionate environment.

I believe that living your life authentically is a core of life satisfaction. Sometimes our suffering, loss, or worry makes us avoid living in a truly authentic way. These experiences can lead to post traumatic stress, depression, and/or anxiety. I care about who you are intrinsically, and will work with you to process those painful experiences, cope with anxiety, and reach a point where life feels manageable again. I won't push people to relive bad experiences, but I will work to establish a safe space to share and explore your needs at your own pace.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
