I also have extensive experience treating sexual abuse traumas.
Everyone deserves peace and happiness. I know that considering counseling takes courage and choosing the right therapist is very important. I have a passion for working alongside individuals on their healing journeys and creating a safe place to work on issues that are bothering them which can include wounds both hidden and unhidden. While the process of healing is not always comfortable, it is worth the work.

Helping survivors of assault is a personal and professional calling that I'm honored to answer.
Past abuse experiences aren't necessarily old history. It's common to still struggle months, even years after the painful experience. Do you struggle with intimacy in relationships, or feelings of discomfort around sex, even when it's consensual? Sometimes there is no shortage of sexual experiences but you find it difficult to enjoy them, needing more, or feeling numb. You may be feeling shame, loneliness, and sudden or strong emotional reactions to subtle reminders of the abuse. It's common to forget or have doubts about whether the abuse was real or imagined. You're not alone.

I have experience and interest in working with adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, history of trauma, relationships, substance use and abuse (including sex addiction), sexually deviant thoughts, sexual abuse , and sexual intimacy.
In dealing with stressors, life events, challenging relationships, and traumatic experiences we develop patterns to keep ourselves safe and sane; which often also limits us. The challenge is unlearning these narratives and trusting our innate wisdom. When we feel safe, secure and accepted for who we are we can begin the process of shedding what doesn’t work for us, while exploring our untapped potential. I believe you are the master of your story; and I hope to create a safe space where we can gain insight about your inner battles, develop skills to enhance holistic development, and realize the potential of your authentic self.

I specialize in the areas of anger management, divorce, separation, male identity issues, anxiety, depression, grief, child abuse, sexual abuse , parenting, adolescent maladaptive behavior and effective communication skills.
Learning to know one self is a difficult goal to achieve. People often choose to hide their true selves behind a façade, thinking “they” are invisible, protected from being exposed. By doing so, they often find themselves isolated, anxious and depressed. Sometimes they create a larger, more obvious mask to camouflage their flaws. Learning to put the façade down requires the courage to identify and honestly disclose ones feelings, this creates a trusting sense of self and an openness with others. My approach is to support clients towards becoming their authentic selves

I believe individuals are ever-changing, moment to moment, and with that, naturally pursuing a healthy establishment of authenticity and balance in self-expression. I view the human experience, particularly the therapeutic work done in session, as a spiritual process and take great care in honoring that. My joy comes from working with motivated individuals to create meaningful change in their lives and to address mental health across issues and the lifespan.

I help teens and young adults with anxiety, depression, trauma, and life planning. Life is challenging. It is even more challenging when you can’t seem to get away from the incessant negative voice in your head or the constant feeling of being swallowed up by your emotions. Or maybe, there are just too many choices to make in your life and too many options to know which way to go. It can be overwhelming. I can help.

Welcome to my practice. I have about 15 years of clinical experience and have been featured on NBC/KCAL/HLN as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

When we as humans experience stressors, traumas and challenges, it is not uncommon for our lives to unravel in different ways. If you have ever found it difficult to navigate barriers in your life and experience anxiety and depression as a result, let’s talk. Together we can work on strategies and skills that will allow you to problem solve those barriers and address the root causes of them so you can begin to work toward a life you want. I'm a mother, a wife, spiritual, feminist and a first generation American born Filipino. All of these elements will be reflected in my work and approach to our journey together.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
