I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and other trauma focused interventions.
I'm a second generation Asian American, navigating motherhood. Growing up with traditional cultural values while trying to fit in with American culture has had its challenges. Being a parent in this social media world is tough. I know how isolating it can be. You don't need to go through these challenges alone. Whether you are struggling with cross cultural issues, being a mom, having "mom guilt," or life transitions - I'm here for you. I believe building a strong therapeutic relationship full of honesty, empathy, and some laughs in a judgment free zone is what you need.

My approach includes elements of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Short Term Psychodynamic Therapy and Zen Buddhism.
We begin by telling our story. We go at a slower pace than usual and we pay special attention to the emotionally important parts of the story, e.g., talking to our mother, worrying about work, conflict in a relationship, etc. Here we pause and direct our attention to our abdomen and ask, “How do/did I feel about this or that or him or her?” Then we wait. We don’t rush to answer the question with our heads, we wait for an answer to slowly arise from our bodies. We are bypassing our intellectual defenses and asking our bodies what’s really going on.

I work from a cognitive-behavioral perspective that focuses on changing maladaptive patterns of thinking that impact our behavior, which includes interpersonal relationships with others.
I believe that each person is unique, and as such, requires an individual treatment approach to make lasting psychological, emotional, and behavioral changes. In my clinical practice I have worked with individuals with depression, anxiety, chronic mental illness, and significant transitional life issues (i.e., new baby, divorce, marriage, pre-marital, etc). I have also worked with post-deployment veterans and young adults (i.e., graduate students/professionals) with stress management/civilian reintegration and early career planning. I enjoy helping people and am open to working with those who are eager to grow through the therapeutic process.

I can also help you discover new coping skills which include mindfulness, interpersonal skills, and emotional regulation techniques.
Life can feel impossible to avoid struggling and we often don't feel we have the skills to cope successfully through. Unfortunately, sometimes we don't have all the resources we need for a given situation. Parts of us take on desperate roles trying to help us to survive. This might look like anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, and relationship/family issues. I aim to help you process unresolved issues and feelings and find solutions.

I suggest that a primary barrier to therapeutic change for the client who has experienced relational trauma in early childhood is the limited ability to use one's associative memory during interpersonal exploration.
Dr. Summerlin is not currently accepting new patients. If you call, please leave a message and one of our associates will contact you.

Sound familiar? It is not even 9 am, and your to-do list is already overflowing. You have meetings with so many people, and many subtly give you the impression that you are not "enough." Well, you ARE enough and deserve to feel less stressed and appreciated. It has been said that anxiety is the condition of our time. We worry about people liking us, doing good enough, and simply being enough. It is time to stop. It is time to learn some simple tools to reduce the daily anxiety that is often our constant companion. If this rings true for you, I'd like to help.

Has this pandemic taken a toll on your mental health and relationships? Have problems that weren't too bad a couple years ago become much worse since the pandemic started? A lot of people and relationships have been struggling to cope with high stress and anxiety, and have developed new, unhealthy coping habits like overeating and drinking, or using screen time for relaxation - leading to anxiety, panic attacks, relationship problems and more. The key to recovery is upgrading your coping skills to help you take control of your thoughts, emotions and choices, and learning new ways to manage life's stressors.

Your goals can become reality. Not only can you change for the better, but you can continue fulfillment in life past the walls of treatment. During treatment I hope to communicate that therapy does not have to be scary, sad, or judgmental. Instead, I aspire to create a safe space that allows clients to gain lasting insight and growth. Thus, as a trained professional and passionate individual, my mission is to foster self-sufficiency for my clients by promoting growth and success beyond the time of treatment.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
