I firmly believe that while we can experience feelings and emotions, they don’t have to define us. How we handle these challenging moments often determines our success and inner peace. When you feel stuck and unable to see your options clearly, an outside perspective can be invaluable. Together, we can rewrite your story and forge new paths that suit you. In essence, we will work together to help you become the main character of your narrative once more.

The people I work with have spent years performing, producing and pushing. Then something changes, relationship problems, career changes, or you may realize you want to live more authentically to yourself. I specialize in working with Artists in their 20s-50s navigating all the changes in life and the deeper identity questions that surface over a lifespan. I also work with them to access the vast and dynamic inner landscape of their feelings, making it safe and interesting to begin to dive in, not because its demanded but because it changes everything else in life, how you live, your philosophy and your inherent growth potential.

My job is to help you understand what’s really going on, see it more clearly, and figure out what will actually make a difference. I work best with people who are curious about themselves, even if they’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or burned out. You don’t have to have it all figured out before you start, just a willingness to show up and see what we can do together.

Success at work shouldn’t have to mean failing at home. You’re the person everyone else relies on. You work hard, you’re successful in your career, and you know how to get things done. But when you walk through your front door you're stuck in circular arguments and despite your best efforts, you feel like you’re losing ground. At a Place to Turn, I help driven men, couples, and parents who are tired of the "rinse and repeat" cycle of conflict.

I believe suffering is an invitation. I understand symptoms as the language of the soul, the voice of our deepest Self. The pain you may be feeling makes sense in some way. I will work with you to find the meaning of your difficulty, such that you no longer need the symptom and it might become transformative. We will attend to what you hunger for, beyond any diagnosis you may have. I trust that your psyche knows what is needed, and part of my work is to guide you and hold the hope as you reconnect to your vitality, genius, creativity, self-knowing, intuition and instincts.

Keith McGowen Jr LMFT Owner Divine Marriage- Therapy from the heart. Feel like you’re having the same argument over & over, & nothing is changing, you’re not alone. Most couples don’t have a communication problem—they’re stuck in patterns that keep repeating. My work is especially helpful for couples who feel like they’ve tried everything—but still feel stuck. Whether that looks like constant conflict, emotional distance, or feeling like you’re no longer on the same team. Many of the couples I work with have already tried “talking it out,” reading advice, or making temporary changes, but still find themselves back in the same place.

You might be the one others turn to for advice, but lately, it’s your own emotions that feel like a mystery. Maybe anxiety is running the show. Maybe you're stuck in a relationship dynamic that doesn't feel fair or fulfilling. Maybe you're just tired of feeling like you’re performing instead of connecting. I work with men, queer folks, and couples who want more. More clarity, more honesty, more ease. Together, we’ll explore what’s keeping you stuck and help you move toward something more authentic.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
