Child Therapists in Oakland, CA
I have worked extensively with children and adolescents.
Life can feel overwhelming, isolating, or riddled with anxiety and depression. Perhaps things feel stuck and you are seeking a change and want more out of life. Early adulthood is a particularly challenging time. It can be difficult to challenge the perceptions of the world shaped by our families and upbringing, while maintaining the shared connections and values. It is a time to explore racial, sexual, and gender identities. A task made more complicated when layered with neurodiversity, trauma, grief, or a life circumstance that makes you feel different. Therapy can offer a sense of insight, stability, and self-acceptance.

Children and teens are more aware of their own internal states and the world around them than ever before, while the family unit takes on more stress.
Art can access thoughts and feelings we are not aware of, through open expression and not about "being the perfect artist". Art is never mandatory, as I provide space to allow youth to feel safe while building on their strengths to reach their self-identified goals. I understand differences as I have experience working with ASD and special education.

Are you concerned about your child’s behavior?
Play therapy helps children communicate and connect, understand and gain of control of situations and their emotions. Parents are essential to children’s wellbeing and need support to find new ways of understanding and responding to their children. Children heal best through a secure relationship with a parent, and parents deserve help on their end too.

My philosophy in working with adults & teen is to share cognitive and mindfulness techniques, in a supportive setting, to help my clients make positive changes in their thoughts and actions. Utilizing personal accountability, combined with humor and lightness, I aim to help clients cultivate compassion for themselves, so they may be willing to experiment with new tools. I strive to help clients come back into their bodies, more effectively process their feelings, and move decisively toward wellness. My theory is to be flexible and sensitive in my approach while moving clients toward a more confident, realized version of themselves.

Child Therapists
What can a child therapist help with?
A therapist can help with any difficult experience a child may encounter growing up, including learning problems or anxiety related to school, relationship challenges with friends or parents, bullying, intense emotions or phobias, divorce and family dynamics, or the death of a pet or loved one. A therapist can help children process their experience and develop coping skills in an age-appropriate way.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
