Anger
therapy may be helpful if your
anger
is negatively affecting something of value, such as intimate relationships; employment; health; friendships; relationships with co-workers; your freedom.
Do you recognize some of these ways in which your or others' unhealthy
anger
gets expressed? Verbal abuse (yelling, cursing, insulting making threats, getting in people's faces). Emotional abuse (criticizing, putting down, intimidating). Physical aggression (hitting, shoving, slapping, kicking, choking, forcing sex). Property damage (breaking things, slamming doors, throwing objects). Internalization (stuffing feelings, seething, developing health problems, doing self-harm). Externalization (blaming others including intimate partners, bosses, co-workers, family, friends, the legal system).

In addition to providing individual therapy and couples counseling, I run
Anger Management
groups for women.
There are usually two types of reasons people come into therapy. One is that find themselves making the same mistakes over and over again and they want to do something different, but are just not sure how. The other is that they have been carrying around a deep pain in their life that they want to resolve. Often these things are connected. This is why I work with you on two levels. I help you change the current unwanted behavior, while also helping you resolve issues from your past that may be effecting your reactions.

Childhood trauma can cripple us, it creates overpowering ‘intense’ emotions such as anxiety, depression, and
anger
when left unattended which begins to create physical symptoms to defend our bodies from the internal wounds. Has there ever been a time in your life where you have experienced this reaction? Are you experiencing these feelings based on current or past trauma from childhood, early teens, adolescence, adulthood, or as a senior? I aim to utilize a variety of actionable techniques to help reduce trauma related symptoms and make lasting changes in life.

Racism, harassment, brutality, microaggressions affect our levels of self-esteem, anxiety and depression. You're feeling shame and embarrassment, reeling from the shock,
anger
and pain and find it difficult to talk to others. You are experiencing trauma, and reliving it in your mind and feel alone. Telling those who may not understand, often makes it worse. It's important that you find someone with whom you are comfortable and trust. It’s important for your healing to be supported heard and validated.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
