The heart of my work centers around adults of the South Asian Diaspora. My goal in emphasizing my practice here is to recognize a need for folks to have a therapist who truly understands their background and can create safety in talking about parts of the culture that can feel shameful or misunderstood from a Western perspective. The most common areas of focus include
family
of origin issues, intergenerational trauma and creating space to heal your inner child, acknowledging your grief, exploring your TRUE identity, and cultivating positive relationships by creating boundaries and building self-esteem + confidence.

People are often hesitant to try therapy because they feel it won't work or believe they should be able to handle difficult things on their own. If you're willing to try personal trainers, babysitters, house cleaners, and other services to better your life, doesn't your emotional happiness or the happiness of your
family
deserve the same focus? I believe that it absolutely does.

We can all struggle with stressors at certain times and/or throughout our lives. My goal is to give you the space to explore freely about any problems, issues or concerns along with the successes that you are experiencing. Together we will then identify possible ways to better cope with the challenges life can throw at us.

Psychotherapy is an active process for both client and therapist. An important predictor of success in therapy is the establishment of a solid working relationship that offers freedom and safety to talk about your experiences and beliefs that have been previously avoided, unresolved, or considered too uncomfortable to discuss with friends, spouses, or
family
. As a therapist, I am dedicated to creating an empathic, safe, and highly confidential “holding environment” that offers you an opportunity to work on reducing emotional distress and make better personal choices; within a comfortable, supportive, and collaborative environment.

I have worked over 20 years as a Licensed Marriage &
Family Therapist
. My approach to therapy is based on the idea that the most important ingredient in psychotherapy is the relationship that develops between the therapist and the patient. The patient must feel comfortable, safe and understood. This type of trusting environment motivates the exploration of self and enables individuals to reach their full personal potential (self-actualization).

In the 20+ years I've been a therapist, I've come to understand and appreciate the uniqueness of every individual and
family
.
I have experience working with multicultural populations in a variety of clinical settings. I'm Navajo/Dine, I was born/raised on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico, and my clinical experiences have been both on and off of the reservation. I deeply respect the spirit within all of us, and I treasure the connection we share as a key component of the healing process. I've treated individuals and families from many walks of life and with many different experiences and problems.

I provide therapy to individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, or simply going through a difficult time in their life. Maybe it's related to your work or relationships; sometimes, it can just be plain hard to work through it on your own. And that's where I come in. Therapy with me means taking the time to get to know you and help you find solutions or new ways to manage whatever it is you're going through so you can start feeling better. Some of the type of clients that I enjoy working with are young adults, recent graduates, those trying to start a
family
or new parents.

As a therapist, my broader goal is in helping you experience higher states of fulfillment, joy, and peace of mind - rather than simply helping you decrease the symptoms you're having. It's about happiness and each person's unique recipe for that. I work well with a wide variety of psychoemotional problems such as anxiety, depression, substance misuse, and relationship difficulties with
family
, friendships, the self, or your love life. I have years of experience working in addiction treatment which has allowed me to work with an incredibly diverse population of all backgrounds.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
