Hello, I am a Marriage and Family Therapist who supports my clients in discovering and achieving what they most want in life. As we begin to look more deeply at who we are, we can move toward a life that has increased balance and fulfillment. Many of us suffer in our relationships, careers and internal worlds due to a lack of awareness of the ways in which our past wounds impact current choices and ways of interacting with others. By taking a deeper look at these processes, problematic belief systems can begin to change.

Parenting is difficult especially when your child is suffering. For the past 10 years I have worked with children, adolescents and parents/caregivers who feel stuck, frustrated, and overwhelmed. Parents often reach out because their child is exhibiting anxiety, intense tantrums, negative self-talk, and chronic irritability. I provide a warm, nonjudgmental, and playful environment to deeply understand your child’s behavior. Together we will develop strategies that promote your child’s resilience, flexibility, and confidence. Even in the trickiest of parenting moments we will find clarity and develop practical strategies.

Therapy is a space you carve out with me to reconnect - with yourself, your goals, your life’s meaning, your passion, your creativity, your spiritual path. We all struggle with difficult things at times; they pull us away from who we want to be, or the path we intend to walk in life. I believe relationships are the most important healers we have in our lives – starting with your relationship with yourself! Extending to all your other important and beloved relationships - with family, friends, community, planet, and spirit. No matter where you are, your journey to self-empowerment and joy begins Right Here. I will be there with you.

Therapy provides such a rich opportunity for growth and learning, helping persons to recover from the aftermaths of trauma, abuse and loss, meet the hardships of their lives and thrive. In times like this, with so much anxiety about our collective welfare, it can be an invaluable lifeline. In response to the Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, we are now offering teletherapy (therapy by phone and online by video) for all our clients, whether new or established. Also called telehealth or telebehavioral health, teletherapy can provide vital care and support to individuals, couples and families.

A clinical and developmental psychologist with over 30 years experience, I work with adults, parents and children from birth through adolescence. Development is a continual balance of equilibrium and disequilibrium; a lifelong process as our bodies, brains, relationships and societal expectations change. While the challenges along the way bring the discomfort of vulnerability and negative emotions, they also create opportunity for growth and change. From infancy on, we all have an inner vitality into which therapy can allow us to tap. Therapy provides a safe protected space that nurtures exploration, reflection, growth and change.

Stuck in your head? Tired of talking? Are you able to "understand the problem" but still find the same issues keep coming up in life and your relationships? Have you experienced success and growth, yet still somehow FEEL stuck and dissatisfied? Maybe you've tried therapy but weren't seeing the changes you would like or expect. Or maybe you've avoided therapy because talking about the problem doesn't really seem to "do it". As an expressive arts, somatic therapist I operate from the idea that what happens to you in your life is stored not only in the mind but also in the body and therefore therapy should involve more than just talk.

My lived experiences of being a queer, non-binary, immigrant, person of color navigating the world and the trauma that comes with that, have led me here. I use a strength-based/anti-oppressive/decolonized approach to build on your own inner strengths, identify and rewire unhelpful beliefs/thoughts, and help you access your strengths and skills to reach your goals. I will support you in recognizing the complicated and complex ways that trauma influences all parts of your life, body, and mind.

I work with people who have been told they're “too sensitive,” “too much,” feel misunderstood, or feel alienated from the mainstream. I work with partners looking for a therapist who "gets it." You are not too intense, too sensitive, or too "out there." The whole of you is welcome with me! I work from an anti-oppressive framework and enthusiastically welcome activists, LGBTQIA+, poly + kinky folks, artists + dreamers, highly sensitive + emotionally intense types, marginalized people, and general misfits. I'm dedicated to equity in my relationships and fighting for it systematically.

Confidence and connection are the key ingredients for a meaningful life, but they can be compromised in times of stress or transition. The foundations of the past, once familiar and secure, are shaken. Anxieties encroach. Connections are lost. Yet, I believe that despite the pain and difficulty of these phases, there is immense potential for positive change and personal growth. Helping you discover that potential is what I love most about my work, so I encourage you to reach out to me to get started today. You can email me at vanpeltcounseling@gmail.com or text me at 510-859-4448 to set up a free consultation. I will respond ASAP.

My clients are creative, questioning, and active in diverse communities. They often want a therapist who is both engaging and collaborative with the healing process. Someone who combines the skills of being transparent, supportive, and respectfully challenges them towards change. I have 18 years experience with adults, teens couples, and poly groups. I've led grief groups for those who've lost someone to suicide, managed programs for individuals struggling with severe mental illness, and have become an expert in clinically working with trauma with TAY (Transitional Aged Youth) who are young adult individuals between 18-25.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
