Every person has their own reasons for seeking therapy. Some choose it during a period of major life transitions or hardships, while others may seek out therapy in order to deepen their understanding of themselves. By using a psychodynamic and object relations model I am able to consider the whole person rather than pure symptom reduction. I believe there is both conscious and unconscious meaning to symptoms.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) specializing in trauma with a subspecialty in sexual abuse, working with victims and sexually-abusive youth.
Becoming a therapist was my first choice, a passion I discovered during my sophomore year as an undergrad. Of course, it was not my first major, as I thought I would attend medical school. However, due to a car accident, I had to take a break from classes with laboratory courses, which led me to psychology. The best methods to pique anyone's interest are, in my opinion, abnormal psychology and personality psychology; they started my passion for learning more. After earning my Bachelor's degree in Psychology, I applied for my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialty in Latino Family Studies.

The "Quiet Weight" On paper, you're doing well. People count on you. You show up, deliver, smile when you're supposed to. But somewhere along the way, "fine" became a costume you can't take off. The exhaustion is quiet. The anxiety hums under everything. There are things you've never said out loud, maybe never even let yourself think clearly. I work with children, teens, adults, and elders navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and the kind of relationship pain that doesn't always have words yet, and with couples finding their way back to each other. Most of the people I see are strong, thoughtful, quietly tired of carrying it alone

Therapy allows for the exploration into why we have certain thoughts and emotions. It also helps to strengthen communication skills and has the potential to develop positive changes in relationships. Therapeutic exploration provides an opportunity to discover the root cause of emotional pain and learn how to heal from it. I am a practicing Catholic, and feel that faith plays a large part in our healing. I believe it is important to create a safe space, free of judgment, where clients can feel heard, validated, and understood.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
