You might be someone who’s used to holding it all together—showing up for others, pushing through, staying responsible—but underneath, things feel heavy, overwhelming, or disconnected. Maybe anxiety is constant, relationships feel strained, or you’re just not feeling like yourself anymore.

ONLINE SESSIONS NOW AVAILABLE. I help adults recover from childhood and adult trauma with the use of body centered therapies. Unresolved trauma often negatively affects our relationships, careers, and physical, mental, emotional, & spiritual health. People who have experienced trauma are often doing the very best they know how to deal with the emotional and physiological response to what has happened to them. People often don't realize the struggles they are having in their lives can be linked to things that have happened in the past. They try to change their behavior with little to no success, or easily fall back into old habits.

Most folks seek professional help in a time of crisis. My initial goal is to help to manage your overwhelming feelings regarding the situation you find yourself in. In many cases, helping you to recognize you may already have the skills to cope and showing you how to access those skills may be enough. Other times, after the crisis has subsided, you may become aware of recurrent patterns resulting in upsetting feelings. I am available to work with those looking for short term interventions, as well as those who want to address problems they have struggled with most of there lives.

Life can change in an instant. What was once predictable, safe, and familiar is gone and we are left with the unknown. Life transitions, both big and small, require support. Some are easily manageable while others cause us to forget who we once were. In my practice I focus on working together to again find equilibrium. Sometimes we can't be who we once were but it absolutely does not mean we cannot discover who we are now or who we want to be in the future.

Through the years, I've had the privilege of working closely with diverse groups, including disabled clients, the elderly, and mood disorder individuals.
I've observed patterns while working with clients have reinforced the significance of addressing themes such as childhood abuse, parental substance abuse and generational trauma. These insights continue to shape my approach, which underscores the importance of empathy, fostering resilience, understanding, and grace in building a strong therapeutic alliance.

With more than 20 years of counseling experience, I have seen the toughest trials and the greatest triumphs. I’ve seen hopelessness change to confidence, fear turn to peace, and sadness into joy. And, while therapy isn’t always easy, the results are worth the effort. I personally utilize CBT treatments for anxiety and/or depressive-based disorders and Motivational Interviewing for addiction related struggles. Lastly, I consider spiritual health, physical health, and emotional health to all be equally important to one’s psychological well-being.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
