The analytic encounter is the offer of a space that welcomes the singular and subjective truth of your experiences. This work opens the possibility for coming to terms with the significance of traumatic experiences on the register of the body. The body speaks through symptoms, acts, repetitions and anxieties, but also through unexpected moments of levity or surprise. Through the "fundamental rule" of free association, what has been unspeakable in other settings can find an address. The analytic relationship is there to accompany you as this language of the body is transferred into speech.

How does your need for certainty play out? Does it force you to try to predict? Does it persuade you to declare things that you don't actually know? Perhaps the need for certainty is powerful enough to rob you of genuine moments with loved ones or with yourself. Research finds that people who take risks (those who step into the unknown) are happier than those who merely reach for reward or gratification. Why? Because healthy risk-taking has rewards sewn into the experience when we authentically try. It builds skills in self-advocacy, self-love and self-worth.

I am a Trans Man LMFT licensed in WA and CA. I have experience working across the life span in our community.
Whatever your unique experience is that brought you to seek therapy, we all desire to be seen and affirmed in our journey to uncover our authentic self(s). You may feel as if there just isn't enough room to allow your whole self to be seen, and this can create anxiety and/or depression. Regardless if we are aware of the negative external messages we get, some still seem to find their way into our internal world, and it takes work, support, and self-compassion to confront those messages.

If you're exhausted from trying to hold it all together, you're not alone. You don't need to have all the right words for it, a clear "diagnosis", or a plan. My clients are often thoughtful people who feel seen but not truly known - by others or themselves. Many are creatives, writers, performers or individuals in non-traditional partnerships who experience perfectionism, self-monitoring, "good girlism", or a split between public and private selves. As a former tv writer, I get how stories can help or harm. Stories shape our realities, not the other way around.

Do you struggle with anxiety, your identity, or navigating non-traditional relationships?
I help people reconnect with their inner wisdom, develop stronger relationships, and to get out of survival mode. I offer a compassionate space where all parts of you are welcome especially those parts that have been silenced or shamed.
My approach is client centered, weaving together elements from various modalities such as Internal Family Systems/Parts Work (holding different parts of yourself, even when they conflict) and somatic awareness. We can also use EMDR for healing trauma. My approach is gentle, warm, and affirming.

Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
