My areas of specialty include trauma, PTSD, eating disorders, depression/anxiety; adolescent struggles; substance abuse; women's issues; relational problems faced by many couples and families; grief and loss.
Have your personal/familial relationships become a struggle? Are you noticing negative patterns in your life? Have you had traumatic experiences in your life? Many challenging areas in life stem from how an individual relates to others as well as, of course, life stress. I have worked with many adolescents, parents and individuals in tackling troubling issues that have resulted in marital discord, negative thoughts, behavioral problems and relationships that are less than satisfying. I take a team approach with my clients to assist them in gaining confidence, insight, and developing tools that can be utilized in the future.

I offer your family and teen "coaching" without the stigma of therapy or the need to have long deep discussions.
TEENS - your happy outgoing child has been replaced by a secretive/withdrawn, irritable/defiant teenager , creating worry, anxiety, chaos. You find yourself reacting to your teen , rather than enjoying a happy family. You've tried everything - bribery, setting boundaries, making demands, hurling threats. It's only gotten worse. Worried over the cause of your teen 's change - addiction, (alcohol or drug abuse), ADD/ADHD, body image/self esteem issues (anorexia, bulimia, cutting, weight) bullying, maybe your pending divorce...anxiety, depression, school, suicide attempts, suicide of a friend or family member...

The ideal client is someone who comes to therapy with a willingness to work on his/her issues. I am experienced in child, adolescent , family and individual. It is possible that you've been to therapists and counselors in the past, and you've been disappointed by the lack of concern and care. It is my firm belief that no one deserves to endure the pain of psychological affliction, especially when real help is available. I do everything within my means to ensure my clients' success, and if you happen to be struggling, I want to extend the same help to you.

Whether you are a parent seeking therapy for your teen / adolescent or an individual seeking change in their life.
My focus is working with teens, adolescents, and adults struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD, electronics/gaming addiction, anger, trauma and loss. Often, teens, adolescents and adults who are suffering have difficulty communicating with others, which in-term affects relationships with parents, friends, partners, and other important individuals. Teens and adolescents are also prone to depression and anxiety at this developmental stage, causing low self-esteem, isolating themselves from friends/family, angry/violent outbursts and significant mood swings. This may be difficult to endure alone, and that's where I come in.

Personally, my husband and I have been married 30 years and we have two adolescent children.
I find it a privilege to work with individuals during periods of growth, transition, or challenge in their lives, and have been in private practice for 20 years. I work primarily with the diagnoses of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating issues, adjustment disorders, and relationship difficulties. My approach to psychotherapy is primarily psychodynamic and depth-oriented. I also have a strong interest in contemporary and relational psychoanalysis. I believe in the therapeutic process for symptom relief, for personal insight, for experiencing new ways of being, and for the deepening of human relationships.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
