In the 21st century, it is common knowledge that adolescence can be an extremely trying time filled with struggles of self-exploration, changing social norms, budding sexuality, and academic stressors. It can be a shock to learn of a time back before the 20th century where the concept of the teenage years did not exist and youth were expected to act and respond as adults as soon as signs of childhood waned. Fortunately, modern science and psychology in particular have been instrumental in recognizing and standing up for the unique needs of this essential growing period of milestones and distinctive struggles.
