Domestic violence, sexual assault , and eating disorders all share the feature of trying to convince people of their unworthiness and failure.
I enjoy working with people who would like to change their relationship with problems in their lives, and gain power over these problems and their effects. I have extensive training and experience working with people affected by domestic violence, sexual assault , and eating disorders. In addition, I meet with people who are affected by chronic medical conditions and parent/teen conflict. I view people as having ideas about how they would like to be in life and in relationships; yet, problems can disconnect people from their ideas and identities, influencing them to act in unsatisfactory ways.

I specialize in helping people recover from sexual abuse and unhealthy relationships, helping them to once again trust their own instincts, and speak up for their true needs.
Are you struggling with anxiety and trauma and turning towards unhealthy coping mechanisms in an attempt to manage your emotions? Now is a trying time for almost everyone, and if you have a trauma background what's coming up in the current environment may be reminiscent of the stress, isolation, and fear-induced by early childhood experiences. You don't have to handle this alone, and with clinically tested techniques to regulate the mind and body, it's possible to shift from a place of disempowerment to strength.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best, "Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope." Challenges in life are inevitable and at times, there are challenges that seem larger than our ability to manage them. Issues such as depression, anxiety; healing from previous trauma, and abuse are areas that can grip us and prevent us from living our best lives.

My volunteering at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Aids Project led me to a volunteer management career. I went on to work with volunteers in a medical center, humane society, and adult literacy program. I returned to college later in life to pursue a career in counseling. My desire to become a therapist developed over time as I gained more insight into my own life. A failed marriage landed me in therapy, where I was able to deal with my anger and emotional pain. After some years of antidepressant medication and therapy, I gained a new lease on life.

Humans are social beings. In the caveman days, those who were separated from the pack were not able to survive. A primitive part of our brain longs to stay connected to others. Unsuccessful relationships can feel like death. Sometimes we repeat relationship mistakes. Other times, we withdrawal but isolation can feel like a vast dessert with no end in sight. Luckily there is another way. Being in a healthy relationship with another human being is often a vital component to happiness. As your therapist, I would like to walk with you on your journey towards becoming more connected.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
