We have all felt it at one time or another. Lost. Alone. Uncertain and hesitant. Less than. The life that we want is just out of reach. In the modern world greater connectedness often rings hollow and false. We want to be connected. To be seen. To be known, deeply, authentically, for who we are in our core. We weren't born to feel the way we do, but for something more. Something better. Something we can achieve together.

You struggle with balancing caring for yourself while taking care of others, pushing your needs and boundaries to the side. You're overwhelmed, wondering how long you can keep up with being the one who "keeps it all together." You want to share this but fear you'll be a burden and push others away. This leaves you feeling angry, exhausted, lonely, and stuck. These roles and cycles you find yourself in don't have to be permanent. It's possible to experience life where you feel more connected to yourself, your relationships, and your creativity—one where you can make decisions and set boundaries that are grounded in your values.

I work with the human psyche! WHETHER LIFE IS ON FIRE OR WHEN PAIN IS TOO STRONG TO BEAR OR IF YOU LOOK FOR PERSONAL DISCOVERY. My ideal client comes in in order to learn about how to tune with his or her psyche. Clients, in depth work, learn about the inner and outer relationships and how to connect with the things that lies underneath. I see clients who are looking for discovery of what exists beyond the behavior and their actions and who are willing to dive into learning about the forces that drive them.

COVID19 UPDATE: Yes, I'm open and seeing clients during the pandemic! All sessions are via HIPAA compliant teleconference, with an easy-to-use interface that requires no download or technical expertise. Don't let these uncertain times leave you stuck in seemingly endless "what if..." thinking loops about the future, or mired in the past dwelling on what might have been. Find new tools to deal with our new world. Begin to understand where those and other negative thoughts come from, and what you can do about them. I want to help you stand strong during the current situation and beyond.

You are here for a reason. You may not have ever imagined yourself in therapy before, but you know something needs to change. You have parts of yourself you keep hidden from everyone—parts you don’t even like to look at yourself. Fear, anger, jealousy, insecurity—these are your shadow parts. You keep them in the dark, wishing they would go away. You try to be better, braver, kinder. Still, they follow you. It can be scary and overwhelming to step into the shadows of your self, but there is deep wisdom to be found in the darkness. The feelings you have been avoiding are trying to tell you something—will you listen?

Often our frustrations and emotional pain are rooted in parts of ourselves of which we are largely unaware. Sometimes challengenes or life transitions may create disruption in your life as well as awakening awareness of problematic patterns and pain from the past. You may feel stuck in patterns of bad relationships, loss of identity, or lacking meaning in life, even when you know you want to break free. You may be defined by your job or family role, but what else are you? What is missing in your life from not knowing all that you really are?

Before I came to America I worked with soccer teams helping their players deal with anxiety, something I still do. Twice per year I return to England so therefore clients who are relatively independent and not in crisis are the best suited to working with me. Consequently, I do have a network of excellent support therapists who work with some of my clients while I am away. Many of my current clients are not sports people, they often have to cope with big work and home pressures. I try to help them locate their inner resources while maintaining a supportive stance throughout our meeting.

Emotional pain and mental challenges can overwhelm us and keep us from reaching our goals. In these times it is often necessary to seek professional assistance to move us past the ruts in our lives. I work best with people who have had difficulty with relating to their emotions, resolving past suffering, spiritual abuse, chronic illness, somatic issues, finding meaning, and navigating life transitions. My approach to therapy is specific to each person, and stands on the biblical teachings of Jesus Christ, healing the heart and spirit that are so important to Him.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
