I work with the human psyche! WHETHER LIFE IS ON FIRE OR WHEN PAIN IS TOO STRONG TO BEAR OR IF YOU LOOK FOR PERSONAL DISCOVERY. My ideal client comes in in order to learn about how to tune with his or her psyche. Clients, in depth work, learn about the inner and outer relationships and how to connect with the things that lies underneath. I see clients who are looking for discovery of what exists beyond the behavior and their actions and who are willing to dive into learning about the forces that drive them.

Working with a therapist can feel scary, that’s why my initial goal in the room is to create a safe, comfortable space where the focus is on building relationships with clients. It’s these close relationships that lead to trusting, collaborative and powerful therapy environments. Sometimes reflecting on our past can be difficult, I set the pace of the process specific to your readiness. In addition to proving a safe holding environment, my style is super authentic; I bring warmth, humor, even pop culture references and you’ll likely see my dog Lola pop in the background at times.

You have to believe you deserve something different to actually get something different. How long are you willing to wait? Your answer isn't out there somewhere, it's ... inside you. If you struggle with managing relationship conflict, your constant negative self-talk, finding a partner, codependency, anxious thoughts, or expressing yourself authentically in your life it's likely you have some outdated stories running about yourself and what's possible in life. Those old stories are often related to early experiences in your family. You came up with some creative coping strategies that worked back then, but don't today.

Each of us has had an experience that leads us to question ourselves: Who we are? What we are doing? What are our life goals? In therapy, we can explore certain challenges of life that may cause anxiety, depression, stress, or any other difficult feeling. "Like the lotus flower that is born out of mud, we must honor the darkest parts of ourselves and the most painful of our life's experiences, because they are what allow us to birth our most beautiful self" -Debbie Ford

So many of us find ourselves trapped, caught in unhealthy cycles and relationship patterns, hopeless but wanting change. I want to come alongside you, helping you find insight into those patterns and discover the healing truths about yourself. This moment of insight opens up the possibility of change, allowing you to live your best self in all relationships. Psychotherapy is important to me because it works! I have witnessed psychotherapy bring about the transforming journey from a place of hopelessness to place of freedom in my own life and in the lives of my clients.

Kathy Scott has a warmth and vitality, which foster a sense of trust and safety, and she has an especially strong ability to connect with and understand her clients. Her training in EMDR and psychoanalytic therapy effectively support her work-- helping heal abuse and trauma of all kinds. Because of her own personal experience, she has compassion and a heart for women who are widowed and experiencing deep losses. As a result, Kathy works well with women in transition, divorce, parenting issues, single-parenting, step-parenting, blended families, "empty nest" difficulties, and parent-caregiver concerns.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
