I have a deep understanding of academic research around child and adolescent development.
I am particularly effective in working with bright and highly sensitive teens. During this pandemic, I believe that our most perceptive, sensitive adolescents are having the biggest mental health challenges with not seeing friends, family, and teachers on a more regular basis. I have extensive experience as a School Counselor in both private and public schools in the SF Bay Area. I also have designed and taught Social and Emotional Learning at several private schools. My ideal client is a teen facing the obstacles of anxiety, depression, learning challenges or social skills challenges at school or home.

Specialized therapy for teens and young adults: Are you the parent of a teenager who is having problems at school, with friends, and/or issues at home? Are you a college student or young adult dealing with issues relating to school, work, relationships, and/or family? I come to therapy with years of corporate business experience and my therapeutic background includes working as a mental health therapist at Los Altos High School in Los Altos, CA, teaching the Heart to Heart seminar at Stanford Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto, CA, and training at the Community Health Awareness Council (CHAC) in Mountain View, CA.

Your teen has access to so much info and expectations that it can be like info overload.
Are you noticing that your teen is becoming more overwhelmed, shutting down, or disconnected from the things they once loved? Maybe they are coming home tearful over conflicts with friends or are so stressed about school and college applications that they feel stuck and don't know where to begin. Everything feels too much. They aren't sleeping well and are lashing out or breaking down. With all of the bodily changes and societal expectations, adolescence can be HARD. You want to help your teen and have tried all you can. Now you want to find a safe space for them to share and work through these challenges while building resilience.

Picture your teen thriving in high-school and college, fostering fulfilling relationships, and tackling challenges with resilience.
Your teen is under intense academic pressure, whether from high school demands or the overwhelming transition to college. The stress of grades, exams, and future decisions has led to anxiety, overwhelm, and deep self-doubt. They may feel lost, unsure of who they are or what they want, with expectations from themselves and others only adding to their burden. Technology and social media, once sources of escape, now fuel feelings of isolation, comparison, and inadequacy. You know it's a pivotal moment in their life, and it breaks your heart to see them struggle. You wish you had the right tools to guide them through these challenges.

The emotional right brain is dominant in all forms of psychotherapy which is especially true in child and adolescent therapies.
Whether you've been in therapy before, or this will be your first time; it is important to feel safe and comfortable enough to talk about things that are causing you distress. Are you experiencing life changes, decisions, challenges, trauma, illness, or disabilities? Are you looking for a way to cope with anxiety or depression?  Do you have nightmares or trouble sleeping?  Maybe you have experienced the loss of someone close to you, or a job, or a beloved pet.  Or you are just plain stressed out.  All the time. Talk can help, but so can non-verbal expressive therapies, in a non-threatening, non-judgmental environment.

My more niche specialties include premarital and marital therapy with couples experiencing communication impasse, uncoupling, and rekindling a relationship; therapy with founders, tech execs, and co-founder therapy; teen and young adult psychology; South Asian issues; trichotillomania; and ERP.
As life unfolds, it often presents challenges that require us to adjust and adapt. Good therapy facilitates a clearer understanding of obstacles and how to overcome them to create the life we want. My approach is empathic and intellectually curious and collaborative, always keeping your goals in mind. I have learned that the questions I ask are more important than the advice I give. My clients describe me as warm, active, nonjudgmental, direct, and a gifted listener. I am also highly attuned to teens, and have developed strong relationships with even the most "difficult to reach" kids.

My education and clinical experience includes: Master's Degree from the University of Chicago, Post-Master's Clinical Fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychology, trauma work with domestic violence and sexual assault survivors, grief counseling, 4 years as a high school therapist, and intensive out-patient (IOP) work with adolescents and young adults.
With over 15 years of licensed experience providing therapy in the state of California, I have treated a diversity of clients with a wide array of struggles and strengths. We will work together to create a solid plan that meets your needs using therapeutic techniques that the research has shown will help make improvements in the shortest amount of time. To put it simply, the people I meet with for individual or couples therapy often get better in a short amount of time. The path to "better" looks different for each person/couple and I enjoy figuring that puzzle out.

In addition to private practice, I am a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University, where I see patients in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department and the Adult Psychiatry Department (therapy and neuropsychological testing).
I understand that reaching out for support can be difficult, and it is important to find a therapist you feel you can build a strong relationship with to reach your goals. I'd like to share a bit about myself and my approach, to help you decide if we may be a good fit to work together. My goal is to create a safe space for you to learn new strategies to cope with difficult emotions and build a life that aligns with your values. My approach tends to be collaborative and engaging. I integrate research-based treatments (including mindfulness, CBT, DBT) with empathy, warmth, and compassion to help you create positive change in your life

So many people wonder what happened to their life. They struggle with navigating relationships, question their gender identity, or are pressured at school or work, unsure of how to make it through the day. Moments like these can be overwhelming, but with guidance and support, many can not only survive but flourish.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
