Hello, my name is Mayra Alvarez, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I help individuals heal and rise from past trauma experiences, unexpected life events, generational trauma, grief, and encourage self-authenticity. I have worked with children, adults, and the elderly. I love working with teens, adults, and older adults across different walks of life, cultural backgrounds, and previous therapy experience. Life can be uncertain and unresolved trauma eventually makes itself stand out and can potentially impede everyday functioning. I am bilingual in Spanish and am open to having Spanish-only sessions.

You deserve to feel seen, heard, and supported—especially when life feels like too much. I work with people who’ve been through overwhelming experiences, who may be carrying deep emotional pain, navigating mood or psychiatric challenges, or simply trying to stay afloat in a world that often doesn’t make space for them. My approach is relational, trauma-informed, and grounded in deep respect for your story—I bring a creative, grounded, real-world sensibility (and sense of humor) to meet you with authenticity and care. If you’re curious about what healing could look like together, I invite you to reach out.

I want to congratulate you on starting this journey in finding the best therapist for you. I understand it may be challenging to talk to a stranger about your personal life. Remember, “THERAPY” can be a bit intimidating when you are just starting off. This journey is YOURS, and doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. I would like to be part of that journey to become a better YOU! I am an honest and non-judgmental therapist who can gain your trust. Also, I can help you find balance in your own life and focus on your strengths.

Well-being includes being centered in body, mind and spirit; also happiness and health. Therapy can be a journey to reaching a state of balance and self-love. The challenge is to face and overcome the hardships and stressors that have a nasty habit of getting in the way of being our best self. Getting there isn’t always easy, but having someone to support you along the way is a courageous step in the right direction.

In dealing with stressors, life events, challenging relationships, and traumatic experiences we develop patterns to keep ourselves safe and sane; which often also limits us. The challenge is unlearning these narratives and trusting our innate wisdom. When we feel safe, secure and accepted for who we are we can begin the process of shedding what doesn’t work for us, while exploring our untapped potential. I believe you are the master of your story; and I hope to create a safe space where we can gain insight about your inner battles, develop skills to enhance holistic development, and realize the potential of your authentic self.

You're probably here because a relationship or breakup has taken up more mental space than you'd like to admit. You keep replaying conversations, rereading text messages, trauma dumping on your friends, and asking ChatGPT for advice... wondering where and how it all went wrong. Sleep is off, focus is shot, and part of you feels embarrassed by how consumed you are. You know something isn’t working, yet you're still spiraling and don't know how make it stop. Here's the thing: you're not crazy. You’re stuck. And all the analyzing, ruminating, and hoping something will change isn't helping you get unstuck – it’s keeping you in limbo.

Life presents obstacles, expected and unexpected. These experiences can be tough, especially if you feel there isn't someone you can share with. Even if we have a solid support network, we can face stigma and personal barriers that prevent us from opening up. Therapy can create a safe space to address internal or external conflict, seek personal growth, and restore balance in our lives. I love working with teens, adults, and senior adults. I am most effective with clients presenting with depression & anxiety, grief, life transitions, and family/relational conflict by prioritizing stabilization, managing symptoms, and building hope.

Sometimes it's difficult to share what hurts inside. Maybe you've tried different tools, and things have not changed. That hurting may be preventing you from making decisions, connecting with others, or feeling like yourself ... I'd love to help you see through unresolved conflicts that are keeping you down. My approach is gentle, open, and curious. In our sessions, we'll build safety and we'll explore what hurts at your pace.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
