You love each other, but there’s no denying something isn’t working. Every attempt to talk turns into a fight, or worse—silence. Whether it’s with your partner, parent, sibling, or your adult child—you’re tired of feeling unseen and alone in a relationship that matters so much to you. Maybe you’re too wrapped up in who’s right or wrong to remember why you love each other in the first place. Or, there’s been a betrayal, and you’re unsure if the relationship can survive. Or, you’ve grown apart, and can’t seem to reach each other anymore. Here, we’ll work to understand, repair, and reconnect—so you can find your way back to each other.

You love being a parent! It's so important to you to raise kids who will grow up to be resilient, confident and kind. And you know this means being with them through all the tough stuff, even anger, social struggles and complete overwhelm. But it's stirring up all of your emotions! You’re finding the way you were parented showing up in ways you don't like. You watch yourself shut down, get overly anxious or minimize your kids’ feelings. You’re listening to all the parenting podcasts, but it's hard to put it into practice. Your own patterns can feel so automatic and hard to break!

This world pulls us in many directions and at times it can be challenging to find our footing. My name is Elizabeth Small, and I’m a licensed therapist with a Master's of Social Work from the University of Southern California. I understand firsthand how the demands of a high-pressure career can create an ongoing drive for perfection. The feeling that no matter how much you achieve, it’s never quite enough. That constant pressure can lead to exhaustion and a loss of your true self, something I know because I've been there. I'm here to help you learn how to build a relationship with yourself so you can change this for the better.

You deserve to feel seen and live a life of authenticity without the stress and anxiety of being afraid to show others who you are or who you want to be. So often we find ourselves holding back our needs to ensure the needs of others are being met but this pattern leaves many of us feeling lonely and isolated in our relationships. Therapy can be a way to help you achieve the authenticity you are seeking through processing thoughts and feelings that might be getting in your way of showing up for yourself.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
