My work with individual adults at all stages of life recognizes the transformative power of even the most challenging life transitions. These opportunities may take many forms: fears about mortality and aging,
grief
and
loss
, questions about career and calling, spiritual and existential crises, shifts in sexual identity and orientation, and relationship challenges. I also work with couples (including LGBTQ) and adult family members who want to improve their relationships. Y sí, hablo español. Si desea obtener más información, llámeme, por favor, y podemos platicar de sus necesidades. Trabajo solamente con adultos y no acepto aseguranza.

I work with clients who find themselves in a place of stasis, often when some situation, whether it is
grief
triggered by
loss
, or anxiety and stress resulting from an involvement with high-conflict personalities, has impeded their ability to meet their goals. Many individuals feel stymied and frustrated by a feeling of being "stuck." For high-achievers, the ability to set and meet goals has become an ingrained expectation, and the feeling of something, or someone, interfering with their ability to parent, work, or enjoy life, can feel like an new and insurmountable predicament.

You don’t have to continue feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or at a
loss
for how to help your kid.
Are you worried about your child, teen or young adult but unsure how to help them? They may be getting in trouble at school or having intense emotional outbursts. You can see something has changed in them: perhaps they seem depressed, anxious, or isolated in ways they didn’t used to be. They may have experienced
grief
, trauma or a family change or cope in unhealthy ways with substances or self harm. You want them to learn skills to deal with life's challenges and resolve the issues that are holding them back. Because more than anything, you want to see your child thrive.

work, and am certified in the
Grief
Recovery Method.
I take a systemic, whole-person in-context view to my work. My approach is not one-size-fits-all, rather, we build our plan of care together in a dynamic way. Your input on how we work together and where we go with that work is a huge part of the process. I openly acknowledge the inherent power dynamic in the therapeutic relationship, and work to shift that into true relational work - we work as a team. I strive to help you discover your innate capacity to heal, to grow, and am explicit about the methods I use in session to help bring about this capacity. Consent and open dialogue is essential to our work together.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
