I'm Jake Rubin, M.A., a Board Certified Hypnotherapist in Los Angeles specializing in anxiety and subconscious change. I help people who are struggling with anxiety, stress, and internal patterns that keep them stuck. Many of the challenges people face operate below conscious awareness. I work with clients throughout Los Angeles and also internationally through secure virtual hypnotherapy sessions.

I specialize in treating folks with chronic and complex health conditions like ME/CFS, immune issues, chronic pain, GI symptoms, hormone imbalances, weight/diabetes concerns, dysautonomia, etc. (or all of them together if you're one of the lucky ones!). Unfortunately, if this is you, my guess is that you haven't gotten what you need from the healthcare system. Probably just more trauma, confusion, and self doubt. What I am here to say is this: Those conditions are not in your head. They share a set of predictable characteristics that I am familiar with. They ARE treatable. And I can get you started.

If you're looking for an ordinary hypnotherapist, that's not me. And that's why what I do works so well! I didn't choose this work. It chose me. I got pushed in by the Universe, when my husband Dan, a rocket scientist and a lawyer died suddenly. What followed shattered every assumption I held about consciousnesses, reality, and what happens after we leave the body. The profound communication I received from Dan in the months after his death felt like graduate school. Like the Universe had enrolled me in the most advanced curriculum of my life. The experience became my book: Love From Both Sides - True Story of Reincarnation

She also holds a Specialty Certification in Weight Loss Hypnosis from the American Hypnosis Association as well as a Counseling Certification from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
We all know that the majority of dieters inevitably gain back all the weight they’ve lost and more. Emotional eating is a coping mechanism, a survival tactic. This self soothing technique is learned early in life to numb uncomfortable feelings. Dieting focuses on the external rather than the internal cues which fuel overeating. The repetitive cycle of gaining and losing weight leads to feelings of hopelessness, shame, failure, and desperation. In order to shift dysfunctional eating patterns, one must identify underlying experiences and belief systems that perpetuate emotional eating.

I enjoy working with clients who are looking to explore new ways to understand themselves, their relationships, and the reasons for their distress. I think that most of our depression, anxiety, or trauma responses come from a place of protectiveness and if we can learn to have empathy for ourselves in these reactions, we can learn to choose when to double-down and when to let go.

I have 18 years of experience in the behavioral sciences as a clinician and educator. Over the years my approach to clients has evolved from counseling to creative problem-solving. The mind doesn’t come with a user’s manual. But you can learn to use your mind. The mind is the user-interface for your neurosomatic (brain-body) system, similar to the screen of an iPhone or computer. Although we have limitless potential, we need the proper apps (mental strategies or programs) to utilize that potential.

Hypnotherapy is a goal-focused, insight, and skills-based approach that uses a relaxed but focused state to retrain automatic responses and underlying subconscious associations that can affect our behaviors and emotional responses. As a solution-focused therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

We all know that fairy tale endings are rare. For the majority of us, the real challenge is figuring out what happiness means to us. From a young age, we are bombarded with ideas of what it should be, but it's up to us to determine our own meaning. It's not easy - we're often influenced by family, friends, education, and society in our pursuit of happiness. But ultimately, it takes bravery and accountability to face each day and make choices for our own well-being.

My clients are individuals and couples who feel stuck in patterns that are not working. They may feel anxious, overwhelmed, or caught in the same thoughts and reactions. Some struggle with stress or overthinking, while others feel disconnected in their relationships or are trying to rebuild trust. My approach is direct and supportive. I am a private pay practice and can provide a superbill for possible reimbursement depending on your plan.

What is the relationship between weight management and mental health?
Mental health can be significantly influenced by one's physical health, so overall improvements in one's quality of life as a result of improved physical functioning from weight loss can have an overall positive impact on an individual's mental health and allow them to engage more readily in everyday activities. In addition, many strategies used to manage weight, such as exercise and maintaining a healthy diet, are also associated with reducing the symptoms of common mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression. Individuals may also benefit from the improved self-esteem and self-efficacy that can come with successful weight management.

What is the psychological approach to losing weight?
While there are no specific therapy modalities specifically for weight loss, common psychological therapies can be highly effective in helping clients make lasting lifestyle changes. This may be called the "psychological approach" to weight loss because it does not rely on physical interventions, such as medication or weight loss surgery, to help clients lose weight. Weight loss counseling can be used in addition to or instead of such physical interventions. Some clients simply seek therapy to address the challenges that may accompany weight loss in general, including negative thoughts surrounding their body, disordered eating patterns, or difficulty completing daily tasks as a result of their weight challenges. In such cases, therapists will often utilize behavioral coaching or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to help clients understand how their thoughts may be influencing their diet and physical activity patterns.

What type of therapy is commonly used in weight loss counseling?
Weight loss counseling often involves a combination of therapy and psychoeducation. Common techniques used by weight loss counselors include journaling, thought diaries, and other Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies that encourage clients to consider how their feelings about their weight loss impact their mental health. Weight loss counselors may also teach clients mindfulness exercises, which can be used by clients during and after eating to be more aware of physical cues from their body surrounding eating. Some clients looking for weight loss therapy may also benefit from group therapy approaches, which utilize the power of social connection and accountability to help clients adhere to their weight loss plan.

Is therapy recommended for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery?
While therapy is not a requirement for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery, many individuals undergoing weight loss surgery may benefit from seeing a counselor. Prior to surgery, counselors can help clients decide whether surgical weight loss is a good fit for them and assist in surgery preparation. Post-surgery, counselors can assist clients with the psychological component of maintaining their weight loss, as well as help clients navigate any postoperative pain. Throughout the surgical process, therapists can help clients process body-image challenges that may come with dramatic changes in weight, as well as manage symptoms of anxiety or depression that may accompany the major life changes bariatric surgery can bring.
