I specialize in treating individuals with physical health difficulties, such as chronic pain, illness, or
insomnia
that may contribute to one’s emotional well-being.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families who may be struggling with difficulties related to the intersection between physical and mental health. I specialize in evidence-based treatment and have extensive training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and mindfulness-based approaches. I see therapy as a way to utilize these evidence-based treatments to explore whatever may be keeping you stuck in the habits, patterns, or situations that may no longer be serving you and learning skills to help you overcome these circumstances.

Can't
sleep
? I'm a board-certified behavioral
sleep
psychologist. I work with adults and adolescents who struggle to turn off their minds at night, spend too long trying to fall asleep, or find themselves wide awake at odd hours. Some wake up too early, others can’t get out of bed in the morning, and many feel sluggish throughout the day. Nightmares and vivid dreams disrupt
sleep
for some and make them dread going to bed. Most have tried hard to solve their
sleep
problems and may worry that sleeping pills are their only option, or they have found that medications and other substances don’t work as well as they once did.

Sleep
difficulties are often overlooked and yet they undermine our mood, productivity, creativity, memory, and overall health. Whether you recently started having difficulty with
sleep
or it's been a long standing problem, there are highly effective treatments that do NOT involve the use of medications. In fact, if you are currently taking medications for
sleep
but would like to reduce or eliminate them, I can help. If anxious thoughts are interfering with your
sleep
, we can find ways to reduce the impact that anxiety has on your
sleep
.

As a health psychologist, I specialize in the treatment of

When it comes to our emotional health, many of us suffer in silence until things have become unmanageable. Unfortunately as children, we don't often get the emotional education that we feel we need; many of us are not taught how to notice, label, or effectively express our emotions. Therapy is a process in which you begin to explore your old patterns and habits, discern those that are no longer serving you, while equipping yourself with more helpful coping skills to add to your toolbox.

Life is filled with challenges and uncertainty, which often makes it difficult to move forward. Both children and adults’ experiences of the unknown can result in them feeling anxious, worried, and/or frustrated. I have focused my professional work in helping people gradually face their fears and problematic behaviors while integrating coping strategies along the way. I strive to help each client recognize their resilience and ability to grow.

Some skills a healer can learn. Others, like compassion and innate understanding of another's inner workings, one must be born with. My focus is on treating anxiety,
insomnia
, stress and depression using a non-drug based meld of hypnosis/NLP, acupuncture and hormonal balancing. The result of nearly three decades of experience, my book on how to help navigate these issues is "Rewired for
Sleep
, The 28 Day
Insomnia
Repair Program" (2020). In it, I clarify that
insomnia
is usually a symptom of other, repairable problems. Time permitting, I am seeing new patients and happily offer a free consultation.

The sun goes down and you're desperate for
sleep
. Unfortunately, this is when your thoughts speed up. You're constantly thinking. You think about how much you think. Your mind replays the day's interactions with others, blaming yourself, and reflecting on how others have hurt you. Feeling like you always mess things up. Waiting for the other shoe to always drop. All you crave is a calm mind. A peaceful spirit. And a good night's rest.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
