Over the years working in a variety of settings with many types of people I have found my niche is working with people who have lasting effects from childhood trauma, addictions and compulsive behaviors, and difficulties in relationships. Clients tell me that my ability to stay consistent, calm, and grounded helps them slow down so they can connect to their body - feel their emotions - and experience themselves more whole and alive. Since 2004 I have worked with people with problematic sexual behavior and their loved ones as a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist (CSAT) using trauma therapies and Pat Carnes Task Centered Approach.

Taking new clients beginning January 2023. You may be experiencing symptoms and discomfort, but you may not know the origin of those symptoms and that discomfort. It may even be pronounced enough that it's causing disruptions in your daily life. Maybe you're feeling sad, depressed, and anxious. Maybe you're experiencing addiction, relationship concerns, work-life balance struggles, or trauma-related issues. Perhaps you're dealing with some type of loss, grief, or major life change. Maybe you just don't feel like yourself. Something is off, but you can't put a finger on it. Or perhaps you just need some support, someone to talk to.

When boundaries have been violated through infidelity, lies and secrets it can be hard to know if a relationship is salvageable. Whether you have been cheated on or done the cheating: is there hope? Is change possible? Problems with intimacy can take many faces; ultimately, we want to be congruent with ourselves and those we love. I specialize in sexuality and have successfully worked with clients to help them heal from betrayal trauma, erectile struggles, acting out with porn, love addiction, exploration of sexual identity, and compulsive sexual behavior. I provide support and interventions that create healthy coping skills.

Nurturing, nonjudgmental understanding, respect and honesty are at the heart of the therapeutic relationship I hope to develop with you. I believe that these deepest principles are the root of healing and recovery. The therapeutic relationship is where and how this takes place. When we address it in the here and now, then it most often generalizes to the present and future of your life. The foundation of my private practice lies in fostering this experience.

Do you and your partner have a hard time resolving conflict? Is the struggle to connect making you feel alone and misunderstood? Or, if you're divorced, is the level of acrimony between you and your ex so intense that it feels impossible to co-parent? I help both partnered and divorced couples learn how to regulate their emotions and communicate skillfully. I also help people who struggle with sexual compulsivity and love addiction learn to manage their feelings without resorting to destructive behaviors or staying attached to unhealthy people.

Give yourself permission to be vulnerable by putting yourself first. Negative and highly-critical self-talk, especially for gay men, is the root of many of our problems and addictions. You may feel “less-than” others, think poorly of yourself, or are unsure how to get your needs met. I can help you to shed light on where this inner-critic is coming from, how to quiet it, and help you rebuild your relationship with self/others. Next, we can develop tools to manage anxiety and depression, embrace your sexuality, develop a healthier relationship to sex/porn, heal infidelity, integrate love and sex, or improve your relationships.

Many of us walk around every day wearing some version of a mask. Some of us do so to protect or take care of others, some of us wear the mask to fit in, and some of us wear it because of shame. My hope is that everyone I work with becomes a little bit more comfortable with the person underneath the mask-- their true authentic self. My practice tends to focus on working with individuals from marginalized communities, including LGBTQ-identified and BIPOC. I truly believe the therapeutic relationship can be a healing one, and be the first step in taking off your mask.

Sexual Addiction Therapists

When should someone seek treatment for sex addiction?

People should seek treatment for sex addiction if they cannot control their sexual thoughts or behaviours to the point that it disrupts their ability to function in daily life, for example by threatening their finances, career, or relationships. This may include spending an excessive amount of time obsessing over sex, planning sex, watching pornography, or masturbating, as well as consistently engaging in risky sexual activities, using sex to escape distressing feelings, or attempting yet failing to control sexual behavior.

What are the most common treatment options for sex addiction?

Psychotherapy is the most common treatment for sex addiction; therapy helps patients better understand their compulsive thoughts and behaviors and develop strategies to manage their desires. Therapy may be supplemented by medications, such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anti-androgens, and the alcohol and substance use medication Naltrexone, as well as support groups, such as 12-step programs.

How long does therapy take for sex addiction?

Recovering from compulsive behavior takes time and effort. There’s no precise timeline for treatment, but research suggests 12 therapy sessions may be enough to see change. Treatment for sexual compulsions requires honesty in therapy, a commitment to understanding triggers and developing coping skills, and potential lifestyle changes such as cutting out alcohol or drugs.

What if sex addiction is left untreated?

Compulsive sexual behavior can have serious repercussions if left unaddressed. For example, if sexual obsessions consume the vast majority of a person’s time, they may lose their job. If they can’t stop paying for sex, their finances may suffer. If they’re dishonest in their relationships, their partner may leave them. If they consistently feel shame, they may struggle with anxiety, depression, or loneliness. Therapy can help people develop the tools to manage sexual thoughts and behaviors that feel uncontrollable.
