I believe that no matter how stuck we feel in life the key to freedom and wellbeing always lies inside us. As an IFS-certified therapist for over 12 years, I have helped many clients find inner peace and fulfillment by recognizing tendencies and patterns that stand in their path to healing. A core IFS belief is that even our most dreaded habits and patterns are protective mechanisms that we have developed unconsciously to remain safe from more hurt and suffering. What makes IFS a powerful modality is that it is not based on pathology or diagnosis but on understanding that our internal system is organized around protection and safety

Having done this work for 35 years the issues that have sadly remained consistent are the high levels of child sexual abuse and adult sexual assault, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
I have been a psychology graduate school professor for many years and I teach and supervise therapists in training about both the art and science of working with clients who have experienced trauma or other difficult life issues. I believe that these experiences have enhanced my abilities as a therapist so I can further support my clients' needs.

As a clinical psychologist and therapeutic hypnotist, I know for a fact we are all born to win. We learn to sabotage and abuse/self-abuse, and whatever we learn, we can un-learn. I am committed to dissolving the negative programming, and freeing the "Inner Winner" in clients.

I believe healing can be found in a variety of ways that are unique to each of us. Our identities, experiences, and stories shape who we are. I believe it is monumental to learn how all of our pieces intersect to create our authentic self. By understanding these, healing can be transformative. By providing guidance, support, safety, and empowerment my main goals are to enhance the healing process and promote thriving. I believe social justice work is a requirement for therapists. I am pro-human rights, pro-LGTBQ+, pro-DEI, pro-pro-intersectionality, anti-ICE, anti-capitalist, anti-fascist, anti-systematic racism.

People come to me when they’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected from themselves, as well as when they’re already on a healing path and longing to go deeper. I support those who are navigating trauma, transitions, or patterns that feel hard to shift on their own. Many seek a steadier nervous system, a clearer sense of who they are, and a more grounded, compassionate way of moving through life.

My ideal client is an adult who feels anxious, burned out, or emotionally disconnected despite seeming “put together.” They struggle with overthinking, self-criticism, or past trauma that still affects their present. They want relief from constant stress, a deeper sense of peace, and healthier relationships. Their goal is to feel more grounded, confident, and connected—to move beyond survival mode and live with clarity, balance, and purpose.

Survivors of sexual trauma and relationship trauma might be feeling a lot right now, especially in the current political climate. Trauma (sexual, relationship, or otherwise) can be both big and loud, and subtle and quiet, and these experiences can deeply impact your sense of safety, trust, and connection with yourself and others. Healing is possible, and you are not alone in these experiences.

The brain has a negative bias, it scans for threat. Scanning for the "negative" is not all bad. Being stuck in this "negative" state of scanning for danger can hinder movement forward. I can help you shift from fear state to different states of being with interest and curiosity. This shift from state to state is what helps grow your resiliency and ability to tolerate.

Hi there, I’m Sam — welcome to my practice. I work with highly sensitive people and young adults who feel deeply, think deeply, and want to feel more grounded, authentic, and at home within themselves. You may carry the impact of trauma, anxiety, depression, or grief—and notice how painful experiences continue to live in your body and relationships. Perhaps you find yourself caught in patterns of perfectionism or feeling like parts of you are "too much" or "not enough." I deeply welcome all of these parts of you into our work together—including your creativity or spirituality, if they feel meaningful to your healing.

I have experience and interest in working with adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, history of trauma, relationships, substance use and abuse (including sex addiction), sexually deviant thoughts, sexual abuse, and sexual intimacy.
In dealing with stressors, life events, challenging relationships, and traumatic experiences we develop patterns to keep ourselves safe and sane; which often also limits us. The challenge is unlearning these narratives and trusting our innate wisdom. When we feel safe, secure and accepted for who we are we can begin the process of shedding what doesn’t work for us, while exploring our untapped potential. I believe you are the master of your story; and I hope to create a safe space where we can gain insight about your inner battles, develop skills to enhance holistic development, and realize the potential of your authentic self.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
