My practice integrates: CBT, DBT, positive psychology , mindfulness, and holistic healing approaches.
Life gets difficult. -Our distress may make us uncomfortable, overwhelmed, anxious, angry, sad and/or depressed. -Maybe we experienced a job loss, have to move, had a significant relationship end, or experienced a major shift, change, or transition in our life. -Really, we want to feel "better" and "happier", but how do we get there? Short-term counseling or coaching can help and sometimes we needed to address deeper issues and patterns through psychotherapy. Each of us is different, but maybe you found your way here because you are ready to let go, ready to grow, and ready for something new, different, and better for your life.

I teach couples powerful tools and give homework. My background is in Positive Psychology . People describe me as warm, down-to-earth and they say I have a good sense of humor. I think couples therapy should be uplifting -- and show results. I help all kinds of couples: married and unmarried, straight, gay, and couples soon to marry. I'm dedicated to helping couples overcome their problems. I'm even-handed and I find solutions. (And on a personal note, I've been happily married for 30 years). I combine Positive Psychology , CBT, mindfulness, Gottman, and the best of contemporary psychology. I taught in the medical school at UCLA.

I taught Positive Psychology to the med students at UCLA and have done this work for 25 years.
I'm told I'm warm, smart, and that I have a good sense of humor. (Sometimes my dog likes to sit in on sessions.) I believe therapy has got to change lives -- and be enjoyable. Unlike some therapists, I believe in setting goals and tracking progress. Why go to therapy without results? What's my specialty? Helping people free themselves from what holds them back. My approach combines Positive Psychology and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) with mindfulness and a creative mix of the best approaches known to modern psychology.

After practicing psychotherapy for seventeen years at UCLA and Cornell University, I've come to realize that as human beings, we make the most change when we're able to harness the power of positive thinking and doing. A positive mind leads to resilience, self-confidence, and sustained happiness. Contrary to what you may believe, ordinary people like you and me can learn positive psychology . It isn't as hard as you think because we're born with the ability to heal ourselves and succeed in life. It's something to experience and discover for yourself. Happiness IS possible.

Therefore, I use therapies that include strength building, solution focused, positive psychology , skills building and Cognitive Behavioral modalities which can help lead to happiness and to changing behaviors, thoughts and feelings.
It is difficult to ask for help and even more difficult to chose a psychologist. This is especially true if you are in crisis, having difficulty coping, worried about a loved one or struggling with a low mood or anxiety. I've had 40 years of experience working with people. It is an adventure getting to know a new client and rewarding to watch them become happier, more effective and improve their life.

It is my belief that healing comes from within you, and within the context of relationship. I practice Somatic Experiencing therapy, which focuses on positive psychology and the concept of healing at a biological and nervous system level (reconnecting the mind and body as one). As a facilitator and witness to this healing, I have had the privilege of working with clients experiencing a variety of presenting issues. I aim to provide a space for you to be your truest self, to help you to create more balance in your life, to break free from old patterns, and to expand your natural capacity to heal.

Positive Psychology Therapists

How does positive psychology therapy work?

Positive psychology therapy derives from the work of Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania. He and others developed the field of positive psychology building on humanistic theory. Positive psychology therapy is similar to acceptance and commitment therapy, and it essentially quiets emotional distress through positivity, contentment, and well-being. This therapy does not reduce the individual to symptoms and conditions.

When do I know if I need treatment using positive psychology?

If an individual is overwhelmed by emotional distress and general negativity, they may feel trapped. A positive psychology therapist can help them view their emotions and behaviors differently, and approach life with a better understanding of their positive strengths. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from positive psychology therapy?

The patient may be asked to explore their signature strengths. The therapist will also ask the individual to talk about their goals, which should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Discussing negative experiences and symptoms is important, but so is the exploration of positive experiences. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more positive and fulfilling way. This therapy is proactive and may use forgiveness, gratitude, hope, and compassion to help reframe negativity.

Is positive psychology effective in therapy?

Positive psychology therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with eating disorders benefit from this type of intervention. This therapy encourages the person to reframe their distressed thoughts and move into healthier patterns of functioning. This therapy also aims to move an individual toward what works well in their life. Positive psychology therapy can elicit lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
