I have success working with clients who have difficulty with codependency, big life changes, alcohol use, executive functioning, the LGBTQIA+ experience, and
hoarding
.
Clients who work with me realize how they can be in the driver's seat of their life and challenge the guilt, shame and pain that keeps them stuck. Many of my clients overlook their well-being due to exhausting themselves in their relationships or have difficulties with confidence, boundaries and managing big emotions. I help clients develop skills to deal with challenging situations, process complicated emotions, and establish healthy relationships with people and themselves. I strive to create a safe and encouraging space where you are able to freely share, express unfiltered thoughts and explore personal pains.

You've probably always wanted to be able to feel calm in the midst of difficult situations, maybe for your whole life. But for many of us, this doesn't come naturally. The reality is, for those people you look up to in your life who are able to have strong relationships, feel calm under pressure, it doesn't come naturally for them either. They learned an important skill called emotional regulation that guides them through difficult times. It's what helps them make clear decisions, express themselves vulnerably, manage their time and money well, and share deep moments of connection.

Hello :-) My aim is to help you help yourself. And I love doing that in a profound way. Psychotherapy & life coaching have allowed me to dive deep with people to help them become their best selves. When I'm not doing therapy, I'm making music, hiking, surfing, or reading something thought-provoking. I may even recommend books, movies, etc. to help you dive even deeper and get the most out of our time together. Are you ready to work through your past and move forward in your life?

I will be able to help any family who experiences the unwanted visitor of brain disorders. I have worked for years as President of the National Alliance on Mental Illness LA. When a brain disorder kidnaps the brain of a loved one, it kidnaps the entire family in a sea of confusion, chaos, despair, heartache and loss. There are tools to help family members create a healing environment for the loved one. There is emotional help so family members will not be so reactive. There are many resources that may be helpful. Let me help you create space for the illness and move you toward understanding and acceptance. Sharon Dunas, LMFT

Trauma and other life stressors can cause you to feel isolated and lose hope about your situation. A therapist skilled in these areas can be a valuable resource for people struggling to cope. Through therapy, you can work through your emotions, process your experiences, and develop coping skills that will help you feel like your ideal self. A good therapist should provide a safe and supportive environment so that clients can explore their feelings and issues without fear of judgement. Only this way will you feel that your problems do not identify you and you are not alone with them. It is up to you to decide when you are ready.

"Wisdom knows what feelings are present without being lost in them." - Buddha. Therapy is a collaborative journey where I can help you find relief from emotional distress, gain clarity on your issues, and develop coping skills and tools to move forward. I believe you deserve therapy specifically crafted to fit your personality and lifestyle, as opposed to being treated with some sort of template. I encourage my clients to have open communication with me in order to get their needs met. My goal is to help you experience healing at this time in your life and also gain wisdom for future challenges.

Welcome to my practice. I have about 15 years of clinical experience and have been featured on NBC/KCAL/HLN as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

My belief is that at heart each wants to lead a meaningful life. We want to enjoy achievements, milestones, and enjoy our loved ones. We also need to feel loved, needed and appreciated. Our work, social and family life reflect our spiritual and philosophical beliefs...and when they don't, we feel in conflict with ourselves, and seek assistance to get into a place of feeling good. I'll work with you to support you in improving your life, with a beginning focus on those factors that are critical now. We'll work together for your well-being. The intake packet asks you to list the issues you want to address & indicate priority.

Hoarding Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.
How long does therapy for hoarding take?
Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.
Are there medications for hoarding?
The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.
Can hoarding come back after treatment?
Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
