Together, and/or with your partner/partners, we will dive into uncomfortable and often unfamiliar emotional territory.
Existing can be difficult. Tolerating the pressures of personal and societal histories can leave you feeling stuck; add figuring out meaning and purpose of life, and things get overwhelming. Using a straightforward, interactive style (with plenty of humor) I will assist you in bringing a new understanding to issues from the past that limit and color the present. I create a collaborative space where we make sense of all the unknowns of life; whether you are looking to heal shame, trauma, or heal anxiety or grief, I will help you can make the changes necessary to make living a bit easier and move through life with more grace.

I'm also a mother and have an affinity for working with children, adolescents, couples, and families on communication, parenting, and other issues.
Are you feeling stuck? Hopeless? Unsure where to turn? We have all been there. I believe therapy provides safety, hope, understanding, and a way forward. I'm committed to creating a safe, warm, and non-judgmental space for my clients. I know from experience that holding onto hope for meaningful change, even when clients can't hold onto that hope for themselves, is one of the most powerful things I can offer.

Thank you for reviewing my profile. I work with individuals (adolescents and adults), couples, and families and have experience treating issues ranging from ADHD to occupational difficulties. I work especially with anxiety in all its forms, depression, and relationship challenges. My research has focused on attachment and social cognition, specifically in relation to anxiety, depression, and personality disorders. I have found that the therapeutic relationship, with its strong bond between the patient and an attuned therapist, is the most consistent and powerful mechanism of change.

I specialize in working with both individuals and couples to reconnect to themselves and one another.
Are you noticing patterns in your feelings or relationships that you want to change? You might be able to pinpoint some past experiences that are influencing life today, or maybe you just know something is “off.”. You’re noticing the same arguments with your partner or the same feelings of anxiety or depression crop up, even though you’ve tried to change them on your own. You feel like you bend over backwards for others at home or work, sometimes at the expense of your own wants and needs. You want to get back to a place of connection and confidence in life and experience the freedom and peace that’s missing right now.

I use a variety of techniques, including Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction to overcome challenges in the areas of trauma, relationships, anxiety, depression, identity (sexuality/gender), perfectionism, shame, and other hurdles bringing you or your relationship down.
Ever do something despite knowing it is not good for you? Or feel a certain way and just can't kick it? Nothing is wrong with you: you are simply dealing with life and challenges the best way you learned how to even though you "know" it is not working. Sometimes we need help translating what the mind/body is telling us. It is a language not taught in school, but I'm here to help you comprehend and heal with it, not avoid its discomfort.

In addition to what is listed, I provide treatment in the following specialized areas: combat trauma; reunification of families after traumatic separation; couples with nontraditional lifestyles; and high profile individuals and/or their partners.
You engage in therapy because there is something in your life that isn't working. My genuine curiosity leads me to explore not just what isn’t working, but what has led up to where you are today and what we need to do to move forward with real and lasting change. I am a warm, kind and compassionate therapist but I will also challenge you when appropriate and ask you to consider new perspectives and ideas as we pursue your goals.

Selecting the "right" therapist can be a challenging process. I believe that the relationship between client and therapist begins with the establishment of trust and a desire to grow. I value authenticity, empathy, humor, respect for self and other, and put these values to work in session. My areas of specialty include issues surrounding sexuality and gender, sexual dysfunction, childhood, religious & sexual trauma, the LGBTQIA+ population and those seeking purpose or deeper meaning in life. I aim to meet my clients where they are, holding space for exploration of self, empowerment for growth, and reclamation of their joy for life.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
