When thinking of the population I wanted to work with most, it was people like me that spoke to me most: men who have struggled to feel, struggled expressing their feelings & feeling comfortable and safe enough to do so with their friends, family,
partner
or loved ones. Life is beautiful, but it can be incredibly challenging at times. It's important to be able to talk about life's struggles and challenges with someone.

One of the focuses of my practice is with
couples
dealing with communication issues and struggles feeling connected.
Many have lives where we wear many hats; home, career, relationships, family, and it can become overwhelming. When life adds stressors, it can make managing the hats difficult. I work with clients to take control of their lives by learning to set boundaries and discover the best versions of themselves, no matter what life has handed them in their pasts or in the present. My goal is for each person to learn why they are the way they are, learn how to progress through life, choose different paths, change patterns and behaviors to find a hopeful, peaceful sense of self.

I have experience helping adults, adolescents and
couples
who are coping with anxiety, depression, illness, loss, life transitions including gender and sexual identity, substance abuse,
relationship
concerns including non-monogamy, negative body image, menopause, and the particular challenges faced by those working in the creative fields.
My approach to therapy is based on developing strong relationships with my clients. My style is informal, warm, and direct and my aim is to provide a safe and non-judgmental, yet challenging environment that encourages increased self-awareness and growth. The way we work together will depend on which avenue most effectively addresses your goals.

Sometimes, we feel overwhelmed, discouraged, angry or confused. Managing these feelings can be isolating and lonely. Through Narrative Therapy, I invite my clients to engage in an active, collaborative process. Together, we seek to author life stories of hope and resilience. I believe that each of us possesses inner strengths, and that a therapeutic partnership can help tap into those resources. My goal is to nurture a
relationship
in which clients feel respected and supported. I work with adults 20+ in individual, couple, and family sessions. It would be a privilege to accompany you on your journey of reclaiming possibility.

Are you looking for someone to help you gain practical, actionable skills, to become more self-aligned, grounded, empowered, and consistently supported with sessions tailored to you and your unique journey rather than getting lost in an often re-traumatizing, pathologizing merry-go-round of disconnected, distracted, rushed, or generic sessions? Using a body-oriented approach helps to deepen your
relationship
with yourself AND everyone around you.
Well, it's hit the fan! No matter how you slice it, life since March 2020 has been a doozy. You're in what seems like an never ending pandemic and the future is uncertain. Maybe you're excited the world is opening back up or you feel so stuck, confused, and overwhelmed you want to pull the covers over your head and secretly wish the world would go away. You want to do things differently but don't know HOW. Personal growth is cool but all the self-help books, online yoga workshops, and traditional talk therapy options are coming up short. Guess what? You've just struck gold. I'm here to offer you something different.

The therapeutic
relationship
accounts for most of the success in a person's therapy outcomes, even more than different techniques do.
Do you feel stuck, frozen? Do you feel reactive, out of control? Dysfunctional within your relationships? Or perhaps just far away from the person you used to be? Therapy can help with all of these issues, but many clients say it is hardest to take the first step. I offer a safe environment and warm presence to help you ease into what will be a transformative journey. I work using a radical, trauma-informed lens to help you feel more empowered, to help you recognize yourself again.

You're questioning relationships, feel depressed or anxious, endure family dysfunctional patterns and
relationship
conflict.
There's a desire to express helpless and repressed feelings. You need help sorting out the confusion and alleviating the fears. You've managed well enough on your own, but don't want to anymore. You want support. You need it. Tired of holding in your feelings, you want to acknowledge and talk about them, even though there's a part of you that's afraid. Doing "all the right things" has worked at times, but has it, really? You're now sick and tired, feeling alone, and darned if you do or don't. Aligning with your core values has become important. Striving to break free from who you think you should be is becoming what you're seeking.

Do you feel anxious due to your work, family issues, low self-esteem, and
relationship
issues? I can especially help those with anxiety/panic attacks. I make it a priority to help clients with buried feelings who have trouble speaking on their emotions. Communicating emotionally is extremely important to promote well-rounded and mature adults. I will help you enhance your self-awareness around unhelpful thought and behavior patterns and build skills necessary to handle life more effectively and develop actionable steps to reach your goals.

As a licensed psychologist for the past 37 years, I have worked with adult women and men - young, middle-aged and older - who have struggled with a range of anxiety, mood and relational issues. My particular focus now is working with
couples
- married, separated or pre-marital - to strengthen
relationship
skills and sustain healthy marriages. I work well with clients who either have had minimal therapy exposure, or difficulties feeling understood due to challenges intersecting with cultural, contextual and communication dilemmas. I have a limited practice, so I often work to assist others in finding culturally competent treatment.

Kate Hewitt

My approach to therapy is to create a safe and supportive environment where clients can be seen and heard. My goal is for clients to thrive. I provide support and guidance to individuals and
couples
dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression and grief as well as the stresses that can arise from relationships, career, parenting, fertility, aging and identity. My work is based on the understanding that therapy can be invaluable in processing life's many transitions. Whether you are in crisis or simply need support and a place to talk, we will work together to realize the positive and lasting changes you seek.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
