I have a considerable background working with the
African American
community & other communities of color, and the LGBTQ & non-binary communities.
Maybe you remember this scene from a movie; picture it, a peaceful airplane ride becomes turbulent. The plane begins losing altitude rapidly. The flight attendant urgently instructs you to "put your oxygen mask on first" before helping others. That simple, but critical statement, is just as important in our everyday lives. Remembering to take time to yourself, non selfishly, can be difficult for anyone who tends to place others' needs first. Together, we'll explore your thoughts, feelings, decisions, choices, wants, and needs in your therapy. I will assist you in" finding your voice" and help you to "put your oxygen mask on first.

Whether you searched “EMDR therapists near me”, “
Black
therapists in Los Angeles”, or “therapists for professional women and people”, you’re probably in the right place.
Before we go any further, I want you to know that you are deserving of the person you’re trying to become. Got it? Cool. So here we go. I’m Dr. Hill and I’m here to heal (see what I did there?). I’m audacious, authentic, and unapologetic. I believe in boundaries, transparency, and owning your shit. If you broke the egg? You broke the egg and that's okay because healing isn't always bubble baths and yoga. Sometimes it's messy. If you’re looking to process the childhood you never recovered from, your mother’s inability to nurture you, or a toxic workplace environment? You've met your match!

Mental health struggles are real!
Black
women, men, and elite athletes especially have their own set of unique pressures that add to the emotional distress we often battle in silence. You need empathy and support when you become emotionally fragile, but because you’re expected to be strong, your emotional needs go overlooked and unattended. You try to deal with depression, anxiety, & being overwhelmed, alone, while still showing up as stable. Life is not easy, but remember, it’s okay to pause and seek the emotional support you need, so that you can heal from within, and achieve the mental wellness, wholeness, & balance you deserve.

As a
Black
queer trans man, my focus is on creating an affirming, compassionate, open, and explorative space that meets people where they are and only serves to assist them in getting themselves where they want to be.
I hold the belief that we grow and change through relationships and because of that my style is relational, trauma informed, collaborative and social justice centered. It is not my job or purpose to help create tools for capitalism. I believe there are no predetermined paths or timelines for healing, and that the best way to get where you want is to focus on what keeps you safe, allows you time to rest and helps you create the community you want and need to thrive.

As a
Black
woman who is often seen as "having it all together," it may be challenging to admit that you are having a difficult time. You may automatically say that you are "good" or "well" when people ask how you are doing but know deep down that this is a mask of how you are really feeling. Recognizing and admitting to yourself about the mask is the first courageous step to getting support. Even though many of us have been told to not let our guard down by showing others that we do not have it all together or that only "crazy" people who do not look like us go for therapy (not true!), you know what you need for yourself.

I am dedicated to working with communities who have been pushed into the margins: our BIPOC (
Black
, Indigenous, Persons of Color) family, LGBTQIA+ & GNC (gender non-conforming) family, poly family, and disabled family.
NOTE: While as of January 2023, I am unable to accent new clients, please feel free to connect with any of my fellow colleagues as Nokdu Therapy (nokdutherapy.com) <3 My primary goal in working in mental health is to put myself out of a job. Given that each of us intrinsically know what we need to heal and grow, my approach to psychotherapy is to couple your expertise of being you – your reality and lived experiences – with my skillset, in order to collaboratively work towards achieving your goals. Through a culturally-affirming and healing-centered stance, I utilize evidence-based treatments to facilitate our work.

As a
Black
psychologist, I work at the nexus of challenges unique to African Americans - empowerment, relational effectiveness, and system negotiation - and those connected to them, focusing on marital and family relationships.
As a licensed psychologist for the past 37 years, I have worked with adult women and men - young, middle-aged and older - who have struggled with a range of anxiety, mood and relational issues. My particular focus now is working with couples - married, separated or pre-marital - to strengthen relationship skills and sustain healthy marriages. I work well with clients who either have had minimal therapy exposure, or difficulties feeling understood due to challenges intersecting with cultural, contextual and communication dilemmas. I have a limited practice, so I often work to assist others in finding culturally competent treatment.

Are you a multicultural couple wanting to set boundaries, discuss power and privilege, and improve communication; a
Black
woman professional overwhelmed by stress and trauma; a young adult desiring to develop your racial identity? I look forward to joining you on the path towards greater understanding and acceptance. My mental health and wellness approach centers on compassionate collaboration and direct truth-telling, and much of our work will challenge traditional ways of existing and relating. I value empathy, justice, and racial equity and believe in owning the impact of our words and actions rather than our intentions.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
