While I work with clients with many different needs and experiences, I specialize in working with ADHD, trauma, anxiety, and those recovering from spiritual abuse and coercive control.
The relationship between client and therapist can be one of the most healing aspects of therapy. I prioritize creating a space where you feel seen, safe, and understood. With an integrative approach, I foster collaboration, curiosity, patience, and humor throughout our work together. I believe that healing comes through both support and challenge—creating an environment where we explore different perspectives and alternative ways of thinking. Together we’ll uncover feelings, patterns, and behaviors that impact you today by examining past relationships and experiences.

Common concerns of my clients include: relationships, loneliness/social connection, stress/work-life balance, self-esteem, ADHD, depression, values/meaning.
Currently only accepting focused, short-term therapy clients - 12 sessions or less. Hi I'm Charles Yin. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in CA. I live in San Diego, CA. Growing up in Minnesota, I struggled with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) (aka winter blues). This drove me to find better ways to cope with lack of energy, and feeling empty during the darker days of fall and winter. Two things helped me tremendously in weathering these emotional storms: Running track and cross-country in high school and college— and leaning into my growing faith in Christ.

Whether your darkness is anxiety, sadness, trauma, low self-esteem, body image issues, ADHD, or relationship dissatisfaction, we will climb into that dark place with you so that you’re not looking for that light alone.
This search is often painful and scary, so we will teach you tools from various Evidence Based Practices to ease the impact so that you can keep going. Everyone’s journey to their light is different. Sometimes we know that we’ve found our light when a smile crosses our face for the first time in a while, or when we’re able to take in the kindness of another.

I facilitate an ADHD support group that runs quarterly where clients gather to feel understood, learn more about how their brain works and leave with a few tips to navigate their emotions and life.
My clients tend to show up wondering why anything that isn't happening right now seems too overwhelming to plan, or keep feeling disappointed in their relationships, or maybe even sometimes feel disconnected from their identity because they've played the compromising and accommodating game for way too long. Our bodies are very wise and try to communicate what we need and how we are experiencing the world around us. Therapy can be one way to learn how to tune in. The reality is that whatever behavior it is that we're struggling with is showing up for a reason. Together we can discover what that reason is and lose the shame.

My goal is to help people with anxiety or ADHD (or both) find ways of working with/around their default patterns rather than fighting against them or trying to be a different person.
Stressed, stretched, or scattered doesn’t have to be your normal. The people I work with usually have spent months thinking about doing therapy before taking action. Some hesitate thinking, “I’m just being lazy, I need to be more disciplined, more organized, and stop procrastinating. I just need to try harder.” Others think, “I’m worrying over nothing, it’s silly, I just need to ignore the worry. It’s not that hard.” But it’s not working, hasn’t worked, and it’s fueling the “just try harder loop.” You still feel stressed, stretched, or scattered. If you’ve tried trying hard and trying harder, maybe it’s time to try something else.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
