Throughout my adult years I've drawn tremendous comfort and the ability to stay anchored and live fully in the midst of life's inevitable storms via learning psychological tools and acceptance-based therapies.
Currently only accepting focused, short-term therapy clients - 12 sessions or less. Hi I'm Charles Yin. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in CA. I live in San Diego, CA. Growing up in Minnesota, I struggled with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) (aka winter blues). This drove me to find better ways to cope with lack of energy, and feeling empty during the darker days of fall and winter. Two things helped me tremendously in weathering these emotional storms: Running track and cross-country in high school and college— and leaning into my growing faith in Christ.

I utilize a blend of different modalities, primarily Humanistic Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT).
Do you desire to move forward but don’t understand what may be holding you back? Are you seeking a supportive partner in your healing process? What is important to you when working with a therapist? I follow the notion that the relationship is one of the most important aspects of the healing process and utilize it as one of the main tools in the work with my clients. Whether it is processing trauma, exploring anxiety or depression, addressing relationship issues, or getting through a transitional phase of life, among many other reasons, sometimes therapy with a strong therapeutic relationship as a foundation can make a difference.

It is only after trust is formed that healing begins, and through genuine curiosity, acceptance, and humor, I create a safe place to begin the therapeutic process.
Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, addiction, a life transition, family/parenting concerns, or other mental health issues, we are all trying to better understand ourselves and break free of our limiting patterns and beliefs. My approach to therapy involves a strong foundation in formal therapeutic modalities, including CBT, DBT, family systems, and others, while at the same time recognizing that you are the expert of your own life, and it is through the therapeutic process that you will come to gain valuable insights, recognize your potential, and enhance your capacity for self-love.

Are you tired of starting each day depressed, stressed, or scared? The simple, but difficult act of calling for help, is certain to begin to decrease those negative feelings.
In my practice I often deal with recent and long ago traumatic experiences. These types of experiences often lead to shutting down, with feelings of depression and anxiety. This can result in damaged relationships, substance abuse and isolation. While pain in life is sometimes unavoidable, suffering is almost always optional.

I am additionally trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
I am a firm believer that life can feel so difficult, so bleak, that it is totally reasonable to sometimes question its value. I am also a firm believer that difficult, bleak things can still be meaningful, still include joy, still contain peace. I specialize in complex trauma therapy with teens and adults, frequently including domestic and sexual violence, moderate to severe psychiatric diagnoses, and those with histories of self-harm and suicidality. I am an advocate before I'm a therapist, am antiracist, justice-oriented, and prioritize providing therapy with respect and compassionate curiosity.

I incorporate my training in EFT, DBT, CBT, ACT, and Sex Therapy, which allows for more profound healing than traditional talk therapy.
You’ve read all the books and did all the research, but being in an open relationship is more complicated than it sounded. You thought you had it all figured out, but it turns out you’re just as lost as before. It was supposed to be an exciting time to explore and spice things up, but right now, you’re overwhelmed with anxiety and fear. You’re scared this will ruin your relationship, and jealousy has become a familiar presence. Something has to change.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
