I believe in the healing power of psychotherapy; a warm, caring
relationship
; and room to grow in the individual's unique direction to experience deeper connection and congruity in their relationships and career, increased feelings of self-assurance, and a complete sense of fulfillment in their life. I help people explore what is standing in the way of having a pleasant and fulfilling life so they can move through past experiences and increase their ability to respond to current situations instead of reacting or using unhealthy coping methods.

I have extensive experience working with individuals,
couples
and families.
As a cognitive-behavioral therapist, I believe that people's emotions and behaviors are influenced by their perceptions and interpretation of events. I work collaboratively with my clients in a proactive manner in order for them to learn effective strategies that they can use for the rest of their lives. I also believe that we are influenced by the cultural context in which we grow up. All relationships are, to some extent, are contextual and intercultural. People often face new challenges as they go through transitions in their lives. I bring my life experiences and professional knowledge to therapy.

It isn't easy to make a first appointment with a therapist. Most people think about it for a long time, then think about it some more. But when there's too much fighting, too little energy, too much worry, or loneliness, or disappointment, or just a feeling that something isn't right, it can be a big relief to take that step and do something about it. Therapy can help you to feel better, to be more productive, and to have better relationships.

You may be struggling in a situation that, for whatever reasons, is not improving as you had hoped it would. And now you might be experiencing unwanted emotions related to COVID-19;
relationship
struggles; parenting; marital difficulties; family conflict; a recent trauma; or something else that is painfully impacting you and one or more of your relationships. Are you losing sleep, feeling sad, anxious, depressed, confused, or feeling helpless right now? Feeling stuck? If so and you're here, you're probably tired of trying to figure all of this out by yourself. The good news is you don't have to be alone with all of this anymore.

I believe that all good psychotherapy emerges from developing a
relationship
of empathy and understanding.
For over 35 years I have been treating adults and adolescents in both brief and long-term psychotherapy. I am particularly drawn to working with clients challenged by depression, grief and loss, anxiety and trauma. I believe that facing our wounds is a necessary first step in treatment, but that once the trouble areas are identified the most important work lies in cultivating personal strengths.

Are you feeling lost or stuck in a rut? Have you noticed that you often feel angry, guilty, or bitter and it's affecting your
relationship
with others? Or perhaps you feel ill equipped at managing your emotions and/or conflicts that arise with others. There are so many messages and beliefs being thrown at us on a constant basis, whether it's from others or ourselves, that can make us feel overwhelmed, stressed, depressed, or disingenuous. These feelings can often be debilitating and can sabotage our life and our relationships with others. Perhaps you're ready to feel more confident and want to start taking charge of your life.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
