In helping to manage your emotional distress, particularly
anxiety
and depression, I primarily use principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT); I use CBT to help modify those cognitions that lead to your distress.
I believe the process of change through therapy should not only involve self-understanding and insight into the past, but beyond that it should also focus on helping clients to learn skills for present-time challenges. Therefore my approach helps clients to develop specific skills for thinking and acting in constructive ways. I am a proponent of therapist actively collaborating with a client to help him/her find ways to manage life better.

anxiety
, and trauma. Most importantly, I provide a safe and welcoming therapeutic environment in which patients can explore their symptoms, feelings, and life difficulties. By working together through the therapeutic process, I guide patients into a path of self-discovery and empowerment to develop into healthy and whole individuals. I believe that experiencing hardships can be seen as an invitation to learn more about ourselves and evolve in our life journey to reach our highest potential.

Each of us may begin psychotherapy for different reasons; an immediate crisis or traumatic experience, painful symptoms of depression,
anxiety
, loneliness, addictive behaviors, or grief. Exploring early life experiences and resolving trauma while addressing the here and now can help you be more engaged with others, make progress towards what you want in life, and experience more ease. Many individuals seek more existential but no less important questions of meaning, identity, sexuality, spirituality, philosophy, gender issues, psychology, politics, and power. All of these are excellent reasons for engaging in depth psychotherapy.

I view every client as a unique individual with his / her / their own dreams, hopes, goals, values, needs,
fears
, etc.
I view psychotherapy as a collaborative, co-creative process. It is important for the client to feel a connection with his/her/their therapist and to sense that the therapist has the client's best interests and well-being at heart. I believe that through the process of expanding upon one's inherent strengths and developing insight and awareness, one is able to move into a more empowered state leading to a more enjoyable and gratifying life, a life in which one is able to fully participate. I have worked with many people over the last decade in the arena of psychedelic assisted therapy (MAPS, CIIS (CPTR) degree, and KAP trained).

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
