I am all about developing peace and joy in life, but that can seem beyond reach when you're going through difficult times. Current stressors could affect your sense of wellbeing. If you are dealing with depression , anxiety, addiction, or some other discomfort, there might be underlying issues and remote memories, triggering you. Your relationship or career could be affected and you might be ready to do something about it. If you need to move on from problematic childhood events or heal unprocessed trauma, psychotherapy can offer relief and a (much) better life quality.

Anger, shame, anxiety, depression , and perfectionism are emotions and traits that can be caused by trauma. Unresolved trauma can negatively affect our current relationships and family dynamics. My goal as a therapist is to collaborate with you in order to manage trauma-related symptoms and reach a more meaningful state. I utilize a client-centered approach in order to create a safe space for my clients to process unresolved feelings/reactions. Forming a meaningful connection allows us to create a space that welcomes vulnerability, and the therapeutic relationship is just as important as the therapeutic modality.

If you just keep racing on that career treadmill, surely you will get where you are meant to be, right? But does it sometimes feel like the dream is beyond your grasp? Maybe anxiety, depression , or something else that you don’t know what to call is tugging at you. Or changes have come along that disrupt your sense of wellbeing. Perhaps it feels overwhelming or unachievable to balance the competing interests of work, relationships, family, and your future goals. Or the goals you once had don’t quite fit anymore. And where does that leave you?

I draw from evidence-based approaches, such as CBT and mindfulness to help you manage anxiety and depression .
We all feel lost from time to time, but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve been through my own therapy as a young adult when I was stuck in a bout of anxiety and panic attacks due to childhood trauma. Throughout my years of working with traumatized individuals, I learned first-hand about how childhood trauma can have a strong impact on adulthood. I can help you address unresolved trauma, in order for you to find passion, connection, and purpose in your life.

Childhood trauma can cripple us, it creates overpowering ‘intense’ emotions such as anxiety, depression , and anger when left unattended which begins to create physical symptoms to defend our bodies from the internal wounds. Has there ever been a time in your life where you have experienced this reaction? Are you experiencing these feelings based on current or past trauma from childhood, early teens, adolescence, adulthood, or as a senior? I aim to utilize a variety of actionable techniques to help reduce trauma-related symptoms and make lasting changes in life.

I specialize in working with anxiety, depression , and issues around sexuality & intimacy.
While compassion is the cornerstone of my practice, I will also challenge you in more direct ways. Through the process of psychotherapy we come to know ourselves in a meaningful way. This self-insight can lead to comfort, purpose, and more settled, enriching relationships. * A note about COVID-19: this pandemic has already caused all of us great loss, destruction, and grief. We are anxious about what may come. It is of some solace to know that we are all feeling these things across the world, in our own ways, and that we will get through this.

We most likely suffered injuries to our self-esteem at some point - maybe because parents were preoccupied, too busy, or even depressed or overly anxious - or socially we were not supported enough.
Often my clients say they wished they didn’t need so much validation from others in order to have confidence or they want to be more assertive without feeling guilty. They feel strangely alone even in their relationships. Despite being capable & smart and having some degree of insight about how they were raised, people I treat know there is more to the story. Why do they have so much self-doubt or a harsh inner voice or look to others to say they're "okay”? This is where I come in. I help people dig deep into the stories & experiences that shaped them and how those influences sometimes hijack their way of thinking & sense of self.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
