I have extensive experience working with patients with dual diagnoses that include substance abuse, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders, and personality disorders. Over the last 6 years I have worked with clients struggling with comorbid
substance use
and mood disorders. I believe that people are resilient and I cherish that, and work to enhance that resiliency. My recent work has focused on supporting adults struggling with co-occurring mental health and
substance use
challenges.
My experience as a therapist has taken me to diverse settings and introduced me to many different people, from small children to older adults. Along the way, I have learned that no one approach to therapy will work for everyone. Instead, I strive to establish a strong relationship with my clients by meeting them where they are. Together, we explore the unique challenges that brought them to therapy. Together, we zero in on desired therapeutic goals and lay out a fresh path towards positive change.

Regardless of the circumstances, my ideal participant is one who has any amount of motivation and hope that things can be different in their life. I struggled for many years with a substance abuse disorder (specifically opiates among many other substances) that caused wreckage in my life on so many levels. I can empathize with the human that is using and does not know how to stop. I believe in your power, your resilience, and your spirit. I have helped people with complex mental health issues that include bipolar with psychotic features, depression, anxiety, and a range of
substance use
disorders & addiction.

I seek to help families, young adults and adults navigate recovery as it relates to substance abuse and mental health issues. If I could have an "ideal client", it would be someone that has never been to a residential facility before and to catch them before it gets to that point. Most often, the people I work with have some
substance use
history along with mental health issues. Fulfillment, time management, family relationships, communication, harm reduction, abstinence, stability, etc. are often topics that people I work with seek help for.

I treat several types of people: those with Depression (especially the treatment-resistant type); Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD);
Substance Use
Disorder (SUD); and those engaged with existential considerations (meaning, purpose, drive). In many cases - even including those with SUD - the addition of Ketamine can bring about successful changes many have found elusive.

I have experience with the challenges that come with understanding depression and anxiety, family issues, career changes, interpersonal relationships, sex and intimacy, receiving identity and gender affirming care, grief and loss support, and addiction and
substance use
treatment affecting individuals and their loved ones.
You have found the voice of an online therapist inspired by the swells of the Pacific Ocean! I not only have a personal love of ocean culture but also a special interest in increasing our power by creating meaning and healing through finding balance and connection with ourself, others, and our surroundings. I specialize in trauma-focused interventions. I believe in strategies that inform us and support life transitions, help us understand the mind/body connection, and lend to increased awareness and insight of coping habits that no longer serve us and free us from the burden of of our own suffering.

You are your harshest critic. You feel self-doubt, insecurity and you sometimes withdraw from doing the things you enjoy. Your feelings of depression, anxiety or memories of past traumas are sapping the life out of you. Currently or in the past, you may have turned to maladaptive coping behaviors (eating disorders,
substance use
, self-harm, anger, avoidance, etc.) to subdue the experience.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
