Are relationships supposed to be this hard? When sexual issues keep you from maintaining or obtaining a happy relationship it's time to see a sex therapist. As a sex & relationship specialist, I successfully treat people with issues surrounding sexual desire & performance, sexual trauma, problems with arousal or orgasm, differences in the amount of sex they'd like to have, & sexual pain disorders such as vaginismus. I assist clients in building intimacy by deepening their mutual understanding & compassion (for their often very opposite mate!) and help them stay accountable for taking positive action to improve relationships.

At times, we experience painful feelings of guilt and shame, or think "I am not good enough". I specialize in helping individuals with severe
sexual abuse
& trauma. My primary approach is called EMDR, a mind and body therapy which can help you cope more effectively with painful emotions. When a person experiences mild to severe trauma such as abuse, divorce, job stress, or a life-threatening illness, the brain cannot always process the event as it should. As a result, trauma can have a lasting effect and can interfere with your relationships, job and coping with everyday life. EMDR treatment can help move toward healing.

You're smart and motivated and professional. You've managed to piece together a life and career. But behind the curtain, you feel the lurking demons that others would be shocked to know about. You often feel anxious and isolated, despite having people around you, like you're walking around with a sign on your forehead that says "incompetent." Maybe it's hard to trust in relationships or you're constantly fighting off reminders of prior traumas, whether an abusive or neglectful childhood or something more recent. Many of my clients struggle with binge eating or disordered eating or other addictive behaviors.

You have the right and potential to be happy and living the life you want to be. Growth comes when we are able to let go of the need to be certain and embrace self-exploration. We may find ourselves suffering silently or blatantly out loud to the stressors that co-exist with us in our day-to-day lives. Holistic therapy allows for that unique experience to gain and practice the ability to look at self, develop skills to be vulnerable, love + let love in. I offer online 1-on-1, as well as, online courses, workshops, and retreats to fit your needs + preferences.

Taking the first step toward your healing requires courage and I acknowledge the effort you have put forth. Perhaps you have reached a point where you need more awareness in order to deal with your present circumstances. I am a clinical psychologist with several years of experience working with adults, adolescents, and couples. I provide in-depth therapy where we both can begin to explore the underlying causes of your emotional symptoms. I view my role as a psychologist as one who guides you through the healing process. I believe that in order for this to occur, respect, safety, understanding and awareness must be present.

Life is a continual process of establishing and reestablishing various identities for ourselves, and sometimes that gets messy or confusing. Sometimes the ways we think and behave become incongruent with what we want and value. Sometimes we have a hard time knowing what we want and value. Sometimes external events or unforeseen challenges disrupt what we envisioned for ourselves and the future. It can feel tricky to navigate issues of identity development, change, grief, loss, anxiety, decision-making, relationship stress, disillusionment, and life transitions alone. But that's what therapy is for.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
