BIPOC - Have you experienced
loss
or adjusting to change? Life comes with
loss
and change: the
death
of a loved one, the
loss
of health, a break-up. Dealing with any
loss
and adjusting to major change often negatively affects us, and our emotional well-being and coping habits are sometimes compromised as a result. It is easy to fall into depression or develop anxiety if our coping is not managed and nurtured appropriately. I’m glad you are taking steps to process what change or
loss
means to you. As an Asian American Filipina, I provide culturally competent therapy services to those managing dual/multi cultural/BIPOC identities.

"We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty." (Maya Angelou) I understand that as we experience life we will inevitably encounter obstacles and stressors that challenge us to change. I also believe these moments present opportunities for transformation. I recognize that life transitions and personal experiences can sometimes be overwhelming, however they can also be valuable seasons with the potential to generate "peak and valley" experiences that can alter our life course.

“Shame dies when stories are told in safe places.” - Ann Voskamp. It can be hard to find places where we are seen, and can see ourselves, with accuracy and empathy. It can be even harder to ask for help. I would be honored to provide you with that space and to walk alongside you as we explore your most important concerns. If you are a young adult finding your identity in the world, a couple seeking deeper connection, or if you are facing
grief
and/or life transition, I can help. I am trained in Gestalt, somatic and narrative practices, and I facilitate groups for adults experiencing domestic violence.

Welcome! Therapy should be practical and approachable. As a relationship specialist, my collaborative focus is on the "why" of where you are. When we understand why, we can navigate the hurdles getting in your way with insight and healthy coping skills that are effective. You will not be alone in this; we will be working together on expanding awareness of your thoughts, feelings and ways that you engage with the world. This process opens up space for healthier, more intentional relationships that you can actually enjoy (including the one with yourself)! Are you struggling with overwhelming emotions? Have you experienced
loss
, trauma, or other challenges? I am here for you, to help you overcome the emotional pain of past experiences. As a teen, I myself personally experienced the devastating losses of multiple loved ones. Through my own heartbreak, emotional pain, and
grief
, I was even more inspired to comfort and sit with others during their most challenging times. Funny thing is: I knew I wanted to become a psychotherapist before I even know what a therapist was! I feel so lucky today to counsel clients with such diverse and different stories, backgrounds, and experiences.

Finding the right therapist can be a daunting process, yet it is one that really matters. It is understandable to feel out of sorts, isolated, or misunderstood when experiencing relationship, family, peer, academic, or workplace stress, during a life transition, or when recovering from trauma. You may also be struggling with a
death
, the end of a relationship, a relocation from another state or country, an adjustment to a health issue of yourself or a loved one, or being in an environment in which you feel you don't fit. It can be painful to experience these feelings and to try to find a way forward. You don't have to do this alone.

I work with clients dealing with diverse issues: depression, anxiety, self-esteem, relational conflict, identity, parenting, divorce, adoption, and
loss
due to life transitions.
Therapy is a gift of time and of a safe, supportive space for self-examination. Therapy provides awareness of the choice to shape our lives in meaningful ways. It's a collaborative process between client and therapist facilitating personal growth through exploration of the client's unique beliefs, feelings and behaviors. Pasts influence present realities in ways that are often outside of our awareness, and thus have a profound impact on how we view ourselves, connections to others, and place in the world. Losses and changes create disillusionment and helplessness if not processed to allow forward movement and renewed meaning.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
