Are you feeling unsure about what you want for yourself? Has your stress and anxiety become intolerable in a way that’s preventing you from enjoying the present and moving towards your desired future? Do you know what your goals are, but you can’t figure out how to reach them? Are you having trouble liking yourself and offering yourself care and compassion? Many of us hit points where we confront injuries from our past or roadblocks in the present that feel too difficult to face. Sometimes our thoughts and emotions can feel unmanageable or they cause us to lose confidence in our ability to move forward.

I often incorporate accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy, dialectical behavioral therapy ( DBT ), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mind-body connections to address the complexities of each individual and their struggles.
How do you feel about seeking help, especially for your mental and emotional health? Do you think it’s a sign of weakness? As a psychologist, I see it as a sign of strength, courage, self-awareness and maturity. I work with my clients to identify what they’re needing in order for them to improve their lives. I help people find the ways to change and experience personal growth and healing. I support my clients as they discover new aspects of themselves, which can be a challenging but rewarding process.

I also provide DBT training and supervision to community mental health clinics, and serve as a director at The Camden Center.
I often wish I could change my professional moniker from “psychotherapist” to “life enhancer,” because that is truly what I do. I want to help you cultivate self-compassion and acceptance for who you are and where you are at in your life, while at the same time encouraging you to evaluate and change what is not productive. My style can be described as “radically genuine” – I communicate authentically, compassionately and openly. You won’t ever hear that space cadet therapist-y voice coming from me, but you will definitely hear an f-bomb or two.

I specialize in IFS, DBT , and CBT to help my clients to identify their internal parts and help these parts to discover healthier skills for coping.
Life can feel impossible to avoid struggling and we often don't feel we have the skills to cope successfully through. Unfortunately, sometimes we don't have all the resources we need for a given situation. Parts of us take on desperate roles trying to help us to survive. This might look like anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, and relationship/family issues. I aim to help you process unresolved issues and feelings and find solutions.

I draw upon various perspectives to inform my individualized treatment including psychodynamic thought, thirdwave behavioral interventions (ACT DBT ), and spiritual and artistic traditions.
I currently work with adults, couples, and families. I see therapy as one approach for an intentional practice of self and relational awareness. If you are feeling limited by your own beliefs, expectations or blurry boundaries with others, and/or constructs and constraints imposed by our systems, I want to help empower you to be curious about your potential and purpose in your own life and in the world around you. I like metaphors, so I'll use one now. I see therapy as a bass line, something that maintains a consistent and reliable beat in the background while you improvise, play, and experiment in the foreground.

Depending on your needs and goals, my theoretical orientation may include aspects of psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and family systems approaches.
A core part of therapy is the strength of the relationship between client and therapist. I believe in building a positive therapeutic relationship that is collaborative, safe, and genuine. I often work with clients to better understand themselves and their patterns, gain insight into maladaptive behaviors, express their thoughts and emotions honestly, learn to cope effectively with stressors, and find a greater sense of identity and connectedness.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
