People come to me when they feel overwhelmed by their emotions, stuck in spirals of anxiety, depression, or trauma responses. I provide one-on-one, couples, and group therapy to help people explore their identities and relationship issues so that they can overcome the walls they have unintentionally created that may be shutting others out. Personal growth, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship problems, issues surrounding sexual orientation or gender identification, life transitions or everyday life impediments are my primary focus for treatment. I draw upon your own personal strengths, talents, and desires to identify the options you have to move past the challenges you've identified and create alternative outcomes. Whatever the need, growth is a process that is worked on collaboratively in treatment. When the challenge exists between you and a loved one, treatment highlights the development of clear, honest, and respectful communication so that all parties may gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the person next to them.

Entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, writers, LGBTQ + and women of all ages are those who make up the majority of people who come to see me. My clients often find themselves carving out their own path in some way and are in the position of wanting more. Feelings of anxiety or depression may be plaguing you despite efforts to make changes on your own. Your feelings deserve acknowledgement. Often we are very adept at masking our dis-ease, however, this can be a lonely experience if parts of us are never seen. Now you are ready for more clarity, more freedom, and an opportunity to pause and reflect on your narratives and relationships.

I help people who feel disconnected from themselves and find what matters most to them. In the 7+ years I’ve been providing therapy, I have developed a therapeutic style that focuses on understanding the unique experiences that have shaped your sense of yourself and how you move through the world. I also have a particular interest in exploring clients' religious and spiritual identity. Together we can gain a better understanding of why you feel disconnected and take decisive steps to help you feel more engaged and excited about life.

Do you feel knocked off of your center, disconnected from your true self and isolated from others? Are you heavy and lethargic from burdens and stress? Unhappy or angry, but can't pinpoint why? Are you over-worked and trying to outrun anxiety? Whether you are fusing with others, fusing with alcohol or substances, fusing with phoning, over-doing or avoiding, it might feel like you are crashing. Your pain is real and often we will "crash" in order to shift; but you don't have to crash for something to change. You can be called into your truth, peace and love now.

You're uncomfortable, and despite your best efforts, it simply will not go away on its own. Your feelings of anxiety and hopelessness are worthy of acknowledgment because often, it feels like those around you couldn't possibly understand how deep that pain truly is. When our external self does such an excellent job of masking how we feel inside, we don't feel seen, and we don't feel heard. That's a very lonely space to be.

There is a lot of "noise" in our lives that challenges our sense of self, our direction, our place in this world, causes self-doubt and conflict (within ourselves and with others). Using a flexible, client-centered approach I focus on what parts of that "noise" the client seeks clarity with, and how to quiet that "noise" to finally hear yourself. We will set therapy goals together in a safe and affirming space.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
